Does 99 se limited max have ABS
A friend has a 99 max se limited and is in need of front axals. She doesn't know if it has ABS. Without being able to go out to the car, I believe that it does since she said it was loaded. Can anyone tell me if I was correct?

I don't know off hand, but if she gets an ABS light when the key is in the ON position, then she has ABS.... (I know you don't want to go to the car, but perhaps she can).
Btw, you can use ABS axles on a car without ABS, and you can also use buy non-ABS axles and transfer the ABS ring from her old axles to the new ones....

It strikes me that most of the later 4th Gens, apart from some cheapskates who bought basic GXEs, would have ABS brakes.

No sir. ABS was always a stand-alone option. So most original buyers opted out. (Does anyone know the original cost? I'm curious.) In my semi-educated opinion I would be very comfortable in saying less than 5% of 4th gen Maximas have ABS. But you'd be surprised how many people 'think' they have ABS and place it in their sale ad.! The first time I drove 60 miles one way only to find out the car did not have ABS, was the last time. Every time after that, I insisted they go out to the car and turn the key. Doing that saved me at least 5 trips! (even though "ABS" was listed in their ad). I'll never forget the day I found my car. I called just assuming the listed "ABS" was a mistake and I was sooooo stoked when she came back after putting me on hold and trying the key in the car and she said yes! I still was slightly skeptical but drove the 70 miles anyway. The heated seats were a bonus (I didn't know until I got there).

Marketing may have been different in Canada than the United States. IIRC, there were 3 option packages, with various options bundled in each package.
The ABS option was not a stand alone option as it was included within one of the 3 option packages.
I ordered the whole nine yards which included 5-speed manual tranny, heated leather seats and mirrors, sunroof, Bose stereo, climate control AC and ABS brakes.
The car is obviously a Canadian model and came with LSD.
There you go. I thought the vast majority of 4th Gens would have ABS brakes but I am proven wrong for the 2nd time in my short life, lol!

speaking of all this, one would think that a 97-99 mostly would have ABS but so far i have seen that most do NOT have ABS. My 99 SE didnt have it, 95 GXE didnt have it, just looked on my 97 SE and again it doesnt have it lol. It just one of those things though, i personally dont like having ABS anyways so i kinda lucked out. Also i know eckohb's 96gxe didnt have it, 97se didnt have it or his newer 95 SE. With a few of these cars having auto climate, Heated leather, Bose, ect just no ABS

lol no i dont think so but ive been in two crashes in cars that the ABS died in the middle of sliding on a rainy or snowy road. no idea why, i was driving once and had the pedal floored sense it had ABS and it was doing its then just fine and then it just quit and locked up and made me go sideways even though i still had the pedal floored. Sense then i really have not liked ABS id rather pump the pedal myself so i controll everything, its like auto vs 5spd. i like controll so i have 5 spd simple.

yea surprising how many didnt have it, mine doesnt
does anybody know how much it would be to retrofit abs onto a non abs car and how extensive of a job it would be,
assuming the cost of parts only cause my uncle is a mechanic and hes got a lift in his garage
