Mice in engine bay/car.
My car is sitting at home while I am at college all year. I have ordered a cover for it, but my dad took a look at it the other day and said that there are already mice in the engine bay. I am worried that they may chek on some wiring or even make their way into the interior! Is there anything that I can do to deter them? I was thinking mothballs in the interior and in the middle of the block by the knock sesor and various locations.
Are there any obvious holes to get to the interior? (Although mice can pretty much sqeeze into anywhere... )
Any advice is helpful.

I had mice in a 1975 bricklin. The only way I could get rid of them was.
A. Drive the car
B. Trap the crap out of the entire garage.
Mice suck bad Get one of those electric traps. They seem to work great. I also stuck one of those sound things that are supose to detire them. I got them agian in my 91 mr2 Atleast the interior was sealed so clean up was easy. If i get em in my max im going to blow up my neighbors dam chicken coup that aint legal right next to my second garage. You could get a cat to..........

I just had one in the engine bay in the mx6 about a 2 months ago. The idea freaked me out. Warming it wont help, because they usually escape as soon as the engine begins shaking (when you're trying to start the car). What I did was jack the front up and place two jackstands underneath it(at the sides. wouldnt want to give them something to climb). They havent returned. Its only a matter of time before I go out one day and see a human-sized rat sitting in the driver seat, and asking me what the hell I want. Rats really run this city.

fanatic, i agree. i will have my parents put some in the interior as well as under the hood, and possibly replace them every month or so. they are a dime a dozen while engine harnesses are not, so might as well make sure that it stays effective.
thanks for the link, Nissan6, but seeing as there will be snow during the months that i need this protection the most, it won't do as much good. plus, moth ***** are cheap as hell. i just hope the stale smell won't be permanent in the interior come spring.

Some febrezze should get rid of the smell come spring time. The ones in the interior should last until your done with school. It's the ones that are exposed to the weather elements i would be concerned with. Many oldschool hot rod guys use mothballs in there show vehicles.

Cat
Tons and tons of mothballs, all inside engine bay, inside car, on floor etc
a light under the car, just a cheap drop light that u can leave on all the time, it helps
one or more of those electric repellers thingys
get a cover that u drive the car onto half of it and then zip the rest of it up (got one from california car cover for the allante, works great.
All of the above should help, and i would advise against jacking

lol...mice can climb up jackstands! i think it would be cool to use downy sheets, and come back next year to find shredded downy sheets all over your car! as already decided...moth ***** and maybe a trap or two is about the only way...you simply need to move up north here and get actually cold winters to get rid of them critters! (just north of duluth) haha.

i think mothballs will work. yeah mice can climb anything! and it gets damn cold by the cities here too! not worth movin to duluth for :jeffie:. thanks for the help though. if anyone has anything else, i'm open to suggestions.
EDIT: post 2,002! damn, i missed the 2k

I think there was some sort of rodent/animal in my engine bay at one point because a part of the fireprotectant layer on the firewall looks like it was chewed off...I hope the little f*cker died from eating it.

One winter i had a mouse nest in the catera after a 2 week vacation, right on top of the intake manifold, anyway when i went to start the car i thought i heard something a little strange so i opened the hood, and there was the nest, and below on the gatrage floor were 2 mice, each sitting in 2 pieces, belt got to em

My car is garaged, but I had been storing dog food there, and that was one thing that attracted them. I saw teeth marks where they tried to chew open the plastic lid on the bucket that held the food. I got rid of the dog food, and put some weatherstrip on the bottom of the garage door, which had a pretty good sized gap at the bottom. Crossing my fingers, but I haven't had the rat problem for a few years.

Mothball Odor in Car Interior
Q: My husband inherited a 1963 car. It hasn't been driven since 1986, and the interior was exposed to mothballs. How can we get rid of the lingering smell?
-- Kathy Gross, Monroe, Ohio
A: If the car's in a garage, get it into the sun! Open the doors and windows, and let the breeze blow through. Lots of air circulation is needed to dissipate the smell; a fan aimed through the open doors will help. It may take several days. If the odor continues to linger, try an enzyme-based pet-odor remover.
this sounds logical. i would think that a few days of driving around with the windows down should help quite a bit. Also, if that doesn't work, some light febreeze or other cleaner.
I'm planning on putting some mothballs in a tupperware or cool whip container with some holes in the lid. this way, they won't come in direct contact with any surfaces and they will last longer and hopefully work slower.
one cup in the trunk, on on the rear middle footrest hump and a few open ones scattered about the engine bay. That should work.
I don't really want to tape up the interior. I would hate to have duct tape stuck to my car's finish for 5 months, Hopefully this will do the trick. if not, Me--->

I didn't see anyone mention this so far... Irish Spring! It will keep away rodents just like Mothballs and doesn't smell bad. I keep 8 bars in my weekend car over the winter (4 in cabin & 4 in the engine bay). From what I've read, mice love silicone spark plug wires!
