Manual tranny rebuild, now shifter is moving back and forth in gear

Manual tranny, 95 with 140k miles had it rebuilt and the shop took almost six weeks the first time, then when I got it back, it worked, but when I am in 3rd, 4th, or 5th and I accelerate and then let off, the shifter actually moves forward and backwards about an inch. Has anyone ever heard of this? The shop that did it said they ordered new shift linkage and installed it. 1st and 2nd gears work just fine. There is no side to side play in the shifter like there was before they rebuilt it. I actually plan to sell the car soon and get a 5th gen, but would like to fix this issue before then. It might be hard to sell if the shifter moves forward an inch when you hit the gas then backwards an inch when you let off in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

Any ideas? Busted Tranny mount? Bueller?

You're in Dallas?

Have you looked at your motor mounts to see if they need changing? What about revving with the hood open, does the engine move a lot?

That's what it sounds like to me since it only does it when you get on it/off of it.

My money is on the front and rear motor mounts since those are the most important. The other 2 mounts don't bear much of the weight from the engine at all...but check them as well, just in case.

I agree with you. The engine mounts would have to be the problem.

The shifter is connected to the transmission in such a way that it would probably not move back and forth in response to a tranny problem. It is not directly mounted in the trans like a rear wheel drive vehicle.

But who knows? Check the linkage as well while you are under there.

Yeah I'm in Dallas, have been thinking about coming to a DNE meet for the last 2 years, but never made it out yet. You guys still meeting in Frisco?

It didn't move a whole lot before I took in to the shop, and the mechanic said the mounts looked ok when he started, but the way he had the car up on a lift with nothing supporting the motor except a bottle jack for about 5 straight weeks, theres no telling what condition they are in now. I will check them, but why would 1st and 2nd be completely solid and the shifter only move back and forth in 3rd, 4th , and 5th. This is the first and last time I let someone else work on my car without me there.

BTW- when I got the car back my antenna is now bent and won't go all the way down.

take my car to a mechanic = big mistake.

I have a problem similar to this in my car. In 4th gear, when I take my foot off the gas, the transmission will pop out of gear. Some people have said it's a synchro issue (read: rebuild) so I tend to skip 4th gear a lot.

THT: my last tranny use to do that in 5th gear right before it blew.

As for the shifter moving, mine does the exact same thing in 4th gear and I need new motor mounts, thats probably where your problem is.

I didn't read that.

I ignored it.

My tranny is fine.

Just needs a new syncho.

...

Oh well, it'd be an opportunity to put in some bulletproof Altima gears and rebuild (and reshim).

I wonder if it is a synchro issue, because last week when the first gave me the car back, whenever I shifted into 5th it would actually grind the gear as it was engaging, like the synchro wasn't working properly. I gave them the car back and told 'em to fix the shifter back and forth issue and the 5th gear grinding issue and after driving it home last night, it seemed like the 5th gear issue was fixed, but not the shifter issue.

I would love to have just shifter movement. I decided to rebuild mine too since, I didn't want to replace the trans for a third time. Now Mine transmission has locked up 3 times since the shop rebuilt it. Its so much fun

going to bump this thread, but this is just pissing me off.

I have 3 poly mounts, 1 OEM tranny mount, tranny rebuilt recently with new synchros.

3rd, 4th, and 5th gear...my shifter PHYSICALLY moves back and forth upon throttle input. Shifter bushing down under is intact, and linkage is tight. I am running AMSOIL Gl-4!

ANY IDEAS? It is driving me crazy

I Gotta do a 5spd rebuild soon. More on these 'stronger Altima gears' please...
Also, I'd like to make 5th gear a bit taller for highway cruising, and better fuel economy. any ideas?
In for updates...
