Antenna Question
Antenna Question
My antenna does not go all the way down (the last segment stays sticking out). I figured this was normal because I could not push it down and it seems to work just fine, but I noticed that in a lot of pictures, other people's antennas are completely recessed. How can I get mine to go all the way in (I am talking about the car's antenna). Thanks
Try to put some lubricant on the antenna mastAlthough WD-40 isn't a lube, it works quite well to clean out any gunk that is binding the mast, so you could try spary WD-40 all along the mast. Then have someone operate the radio on/off a few times to spread the lubricant - while the antenna is moving down, use your hand to gently push down.. it should retract completely. If that doesn't work, you can replace the mast - 20 bucks, Ebay, 10 mins of your time.
Or:

20 bucks on Ebay or 20 bucks from your local Pep Boys.

ive got the same problem with my antenna not going down all the way. I cleaned the antenna and sprayed it down with WD-40, but unfortunately its still stuck. Any other suggestions on what I should try before replacing the antenna?
I finally replaced my mast on Sunday after several hours of frustration. All of the instructions say, "turn on radio: it'll come right out." Mine didn't - even pulling as hard as I could (admittedly, that's not saying much). I briefly tried pliers on the mast and tried some penetrating lube, but nada. I spent some time shopping for replacements to verify that I had the original factory antenna.
Eventually I had to disassemble the whole thing (hardest part was removing the drain tube), use two pliers, and pull. It came right out. Took ~1 hr for the whole thing.
Oh, and most instructions say, "put a rag over the car so when your needle-nose pliers slip you won't scratch your paint". Do it. You'll slip.

Oh, and I bought a genuine replacement mast from eBay for ~12 bucks. But those at pepboys/advance looked identical. While researching whether my motor was OEM, I learned that most antenna units are manufactured by one company (forget the name - Harada?), and any similar looking replacement whip should work.
The most depressing aspect of the whole ordeal was realizing that most of my coworker's cars were newer and thus didn't have any visible antenna against which I could compare.

I finally got mine to go all the way down and it was pretty easy. I sprayed some Bug & Tar remover into the base of the mast and wiped it down really good. Then I waxed the entire mast and wiped off the excess. I turned the radio on and off a few times and wiped off some gunk in between. Now it works perfectly. Thanks for your help.

... That's gotta be some kind of a record.
At least they searched and did it on their own...
