fog light trim piece

i was wondering if anyone knew that if i didnt put the trim piece on the side of my 95-96 OEM fog lights that it would be bad, b/c of water, dirt getting in, etc

i bought some used fogs from someone and one of the trim pieces is loose so i was just wondering

thanks
