leaky trunk
97 SE---I have a leak problem in the trunk. After a heavy rain I find water in the trunk. It pools up arond the spare and seems to be coming in from around the hinge on the passenger side. Does anyone else have this prob?

- A defect in the rubber seal at the edge of the rear window.
- A defect in the rubber weatherstripping between the trunk lid and the car body.
- A defect in the seal around the taillights.
You may perform your own diagnosis. This requires an assistant, a garden hose, a flashlight, and a roll of duct tape.
1) Remove all cargo from the trunk. Dry it out as best you can.
2) Use duct tape to cover the periphery of the rear window.
3) One person (the "inside man") climbs into the trunk. Close the trunk.
4) The other person (the "outside man") plays a stream of water onto the taillights. With the aid of the flashlight, the inside man watches for any sign of water infiltration. Two minutes should suffice.
5) The outside man plays the stream of water all over the trunk lid. The duct tape serves to ward off any infiltration past a defect in the window glass seal. The inside man watches. Two minutes should suffice.
6) The outside man peels off the duct tape and then plays the stream of water all over the rear window. The inside man watches. Two minutes should suffice.
When you discover the source of the leak use a sealant and/or replacement weatherstripping to eliminate it.
Me too
This happens to me too when it rains heavily (97 GLE). There was a post a while back about this and I think the conclusion was to check the seals around the rear window. My car was rear-ended a long time ago and I think the seal was done incorrectly but I haven't had a chance to thoroughly check it out and it only happens once every couple of months so it's not an immediate issue. Try searching for the post about the leaky trunk.
