Cruising RPMs?

What is the cruising RPM for the maxima in 3d gear? I come from a civic so Im not too sure what its supposed to be on this car.

Also, I noticed that when taking corners I can stay in 3d and the engine doesnt bog coming out of the turn and in fact has ample acceleration power. Do you guys downshift to 2nd on all turns or is staying in 3d sufficient?

Thanks

Just go to the highest possible gear w/o sacrificing the ability to...move.

It doesn;t bog due to a slight increase in torque.

I think speed is irrelevant here. I am asking what is considered cruising Rpms for a 5spd maxima in 3d gear. 2.5? 3?

Well, that depends on speed....

I think that speed is pertinent. If you're cruising, it's usually in one of your O.D. gears. 4 or 5. Standard Maxs have short geaing, very similar to VTEC Hondas.

When cruising, I shift to 4th at around 25-30mph. I cruise in 3rd only when I'm going 25mph or less. I think that's around 2.5k. On acceleration, I shift from 3rd to 4th around 3k, unless I want more punch.

3rd gear A32 5MT = 1.272 w/3.823 FD.

215/60-15's = 25.16"

2500 = ~ 39 mph
3000 = ~46 mph

My personal cruising RPM in 3rd is 20-30 mph

And about the turning thing, for me it all depends on how hard I make the turn or how sharp it is. In most cases, I'll downshift to 2nd, but if it's something like a left turn in a large intersection, I'll keep it in 3rd. As a general rule, I like to keep it above 1.5 RPMs if I can help it (with the exception to 1st and 2nd gears).

Interesting....

I always based my shift points on RPMs rather than actual speed. To be quite honest I usually went by the sound of the engine, but that comes with experience.

Is it fuel efficient to be driving around at 2.5kRPM in 3d gear in town, or should I shift into 4th?

Ok, thanks guys.

It's obviously more fuel effecient to use 4th.

Not entirely true. If your RPMs are too low you will waste more gas getting it into a safe range than keeping it at a higher RPM and a lower gear. I also heard that it has more to do with how hard you have to push the pedal then what RPMs you are at, to an extent obviously.

I love smilies, lol

Should still be at 2100-2300 RPM in 4th @ same RPM in 3rd (2500)
I also heard that it has more to do with how hard you have to push the pedal then what RPMs you are at
It's actually both, closed loop vs open loop

3500 RPM & WOT. (might be 3000)

The VQ is not a B/D16, so it has enough torque not to stall out in 4th at 'cruising' speeds (40-50)

RTFM people.

I don't have the manual in front of me, but I recall that the shift points for maximum fuel efficiency / cruising are: 20mph+ 3rd gear, 28mph+ 4th gear, 35-38mph+ 5th gear. Under acceleration, the manual suggests holding the shift points 5-10mph higher. Check them for yourself. (My numbers should be close)

As for going around turns in gear, I sometimes use 3rd if I won't need to accelerate right away. The trick is to very gently apply the throttle or else the engine will jolt the car. I have no qualms with turning/driving in gear as low as 1000rpm, as long as I'm smooth with the on/off of the throttle.

I think some people just don't get it... theres a differenc between cruising and getting to cruising speed.
Lower RPMs is better if you are maintaining a constant speed. Accelerate in lower gears and once you reach the speed you wanna cruise at shift into 5th.. uless you are going slower then 35... it's up to you... dgeesaman lists the best cruising gears and like he said 35+ = 5th gear
Just don't try to accelerate in 5th gear. Downshift to whatever the appropriat gear is for the level of acceleration you want. (not 1st...)

I was going to ask a similar question, but about highway driving. I drive I95 a lot and usually cruise between 65-85 depending on traffic. Curious on what your guys RPMS are reading at these speeds... mine are

5speed 5th gear 85MPH = 3500RPM
5th gear 65MPH = 2800RPM

Wish I had a 6 speed....

EVERYONES RPM will be the same w/ relation to speed unless they changed the gear ratios, have an automatic, or have a different tire dia etc.

5th gear is kinda short, 2500 rpms at 60mph, my freinds auto max is geared taller, he turns 2050-2100 at 60mph

I like how 5th is geared, makes passing a little easier without downshifting into 4th.

Does anyone else find that the car pulls harder at 2kRpms in 3d than 2krpms in second.

i find that if i shift up around 3k its smoother in any gear. i usualy rev match into second at a turn. i never drop gears to gun it, maybe a couple times
i cruise at 2.5 in 3rd in the city
find that going by RPMs and the sound of ur engine is the best way to tell when its time to shift. and its nice to realy learn and feel your car
