That being said, I own both an auto max and a 5-speed TTZ. I think my Z is more fun to drive with the manual, but my max is still a scary ride with the built auto.

I believe that the "faster domestics came with autos" because most people dont want to be bothered with driving stick anymore. People want things that are easy and convenient, and for most people these days, they dont want to be bothered with a clutch pedal and shifter...because then you cant do the 135013571857138 other things people do while they drive these days.
Not trying to argue, just expressing my opinion.
I find it funny everyone assumes they can jump into a 5 Speed 4th gen and completly "own" an automatic maxima.
FYI, last time I was at the 1/8th mile track, I was doing as good as or better than a 5spd with the same mods (except they had lightened flywheel). It's all about the driver and the conditions.
Now if the driver in the 5spd maxima has a lot of experience and can drive it well, then yes, the auto will lose obviously.
And I don't care cause I get the better mileage on the highway.

Fastest stock auto 4th gen= 15.6
Fastest stock 5-speed 4th gen= 14.51@94 mph
Yes, very high 15's. 15.8-15.9. One 15.6. But nowhere near 15.0's or 14's.
Stock 5-speeds have been in the high 14's. I wasn't good enough a driver to pull 14s stock but several have done it.
Stock vs stock there is about a second of difference. A dozen car lengths, give or take. That is huge.

Most stock autos are a full second slower. Typically 1 tenth is about one car length. Gives you an idea of the difference between a stock auto and a stock 5-speed

and in any car, a manual tranny is faster than an auto any day
