I installed an aftermarket starter on my 95 MTX Max and it is having trouble starting. It will hesistate when tryin to start and after about 10 seconds it will start. Will replacing this with a Nissan starter fix this? Thanks for any help in advance.

Possibly, or it could be other things causing this.

I had the same problem, I have replaced the starter with an original Nissan part and the problem was solved. The part number is 23300-2Y900R

If it's the starter that's bad, then yes.

i read that aftermarket starters have a different gear ratio... meaing that they have more or less teeth... making it hard to start...

Just get the updated 11 tooth unit from AutoZone and it should be well.

Does it drag or is it not doing anything when you turn the key?
My max used to have problems when I would turn the key, it wouldnt do any thing at times. Sometime its would start and sometimes it wouldnt. If I jiggled the key, it would start no problem.
I replaced the ign. switch and have had no issues since.

I took out my aftermarket starter (it would not start at all) and brought it back to AutoZone. They tested the starter and it turned out to be bad so they gave me a new starter. I just put the new starter in and now the car won't start. It will turn over but just won't start. Does anybody have any other suggestions?

so it turns and wont fire...but it did fire with the other starter that was broken. weird. I had a simliar problem. for about 8 months i had to pump the gas and turn the key for a long time for it to start and it was worse in cold weather, and it turned out to be ignition switch.
were there any symptoms like lag or hesistations the last times you drove it?

How do you replace the ignition switch? Is it under the plastic on the steering column?

Ignition switch replacement is easy and took me 15 minutes. There is a write up i believe in the "how to" sticky, but it might be in the "FAQ" sticky. And yes it is under the plastic thing on the steering column. all you need is a big screw driver and a little screw driver and some patience.
