As for R&R of the transmission, honestly, if you have to ask about the procedure, it would be best to leave it up to a professional. I would recommend to get a Factory Service Manual for your Maxima (ebay) and do some reading before attempting this.
If you want to see some pictures of when I removed and replaced my transmission, go here:
http://www.iwdwebdesign.com/maxima/tc.htm
It's roughly the same exact procedure between my car and i30krab's. It's almost the same transmission.

Rebuilt tranny is in and working but, if you look under the tranny where the torque convertor bolts to the fly wheel there is a small weep hole and tranny fluid is seeping at this point. I took the car to a local competition tranny shop and they called Rob and they told me to drive on the freeway at high speeds for 50 miles and see if this is just extra fluid caught in the tq con during the reinstall!! They claim up to a cup of oil could be in there. If indeed there is a leak this local shop will pull tranny, reseal it and rob will pay. Is there ever an end to this bullsh-t??
By the way, the car is much faster at lauch.

I used to drag my 91 mustang LX. (500HP) In this arena the 5 speed is quicker until you reach 400-450HP. Then the auto is quicker because there are only autos. Meaning the 5 speed can only handle up to 400-450HP. Anything higher and they break. Modified autos can handle more HP than sticks.

good move bro i have a built level ten auto tranny and it is a wonderful thing. i had it for over 6 yrs before rebuilding it and it continues to amaze me. i have hit in the high 12's esy and it remains strong. by the way nice work i've been following your progress because i plan on doing the cooler set up you have howa the car running?

IT IS NOT STRONGER NOR A LOT MORE RELIABLE. 5 speed trans go bad ALL THE TIME. You can NEVER build a 5 speed to half as strong as an auto. Yes my 2nd shifts so fast that it lifts the wheels off the ground but that's because I have an upgraded racing VB with a built transmission.

Well this is fact in the 5.0 arena. I have raced this arena for 10 years and recently sold my 5.0. I doubt that any five speed could handle that type of HP.
There is not a manf that makes a solid 5 speed to handle obove 400HP for 5.0's. Ask anyone who races there 5.0 and they will tell you this.
Also, if you have a blow off valve, that helps you stay in boost (turbo only).
BTW i ran a SC on my 5.0 w/auto trans. Sticks are quicker with the right driver under 400 HP, been proven at the track. U take an identical car, one with built auto and one with stick and someone who can shift it. The stick will own.

Like I said before, no end to this sh-t!
The tranny is still leaking and it has to come out.

OK.... since my post is still < 15, I cannot start a new thread.... hopefully, I could get answer.
My '96 Max auto trans starts to slip from 2 to 3 if I pull quite hard. So, what do you think?
Should I let it go worse and replace later?
or
Should I get it fixed now before getting worse? If so, how much approximately (so I know if my regular shop gives me good deal or not )? Is it cheaper to get a rebuilt one?
or
Should I start thinking about manual swap?
Thanks a bunch before and after.
