Random Downshifting

Random Downshifting
I've noticed lately that when the car is still cold, the transmission has a tendency to randomly downshift. This is usually within the first 30 seconds of driving the car, and it will happen even if I only give it maybe 1/8 throttle. I've also taken notice that it happens right after I make a turn. It will only do it once, too...never more than once until I turn the car off and let it get cold again.
Only reason it really worries me is because when it downshifts, the RPMs will wind up to about 4000, which is a big no-no for a cold engine.
Anyone have a clue?

Our auto trannys are notorious for staying up in 2nd or even 3rd gear during a rolling stop when they are cold. Applying some throttle to take off causes it to downshift, sometimes jumping down into 1st gear and sending the RPM's way up.
It's pretty normal, just be gentle on it for the first few minutes of driving. As it warms up the downshifting will become a bit better.
