I had a 99, and I really regret the buy. I was hit with the dreaded coil pack problem, which was followed by a few more. Funny how when it was totalled, I went and got a 95 and the thing run's infinitly better than a car 4 years younger. But anyway, from what I have read and heard, the coilpacks is not so much an if problem, but when.

One more thing...the security system. If you put in any key other than the original ones, the immobilizer system will kick in and your car will never start until you take it to the dealer for them to reprogram the keys.

I don't regret buying a 99. I haven't had any problems with my coil packs yet but I'm just a little bit over 60,000 miles. Personally, it was the traction control that sold me on the car. I also like that it has the immobilizer and the ambient temp. button is a nice bonus.

Ditto..I've got 97K miles and the only problem I've had with my car in the last 5 years is my starter went out 2 weeks ago.

So, if the coil packs do go out what are the symptoms?

99 with 92K miles on it. No problems with the coils but I did lose an O2 sensor.... otherwise the car has been running great. As mentioned above the immobilizer system is a mixed blessing, personally I'm a fan of it but I need a new key and the stealership quoted me $120+ for the key and programming.... ouch

misfiring, lack of power, bliking SES light..

I have had 1 coil pack go bad, as well as a KS.. No biggie though.

Cylinder misfire, engine shake (especially at low RPMs), loss of power.

BTW, I've got 122k on mine currently, had 1 coil pack go, then another, so I ended up replacing all 6 eventually.

would the dealership be the only place that would be able to detect a coilpack gone bad or would a mieneke/autozone/pepboys be able to pull it up on there machines also.

Not really sure... I had a dealer work on mine, but it seems simple enough to detect so probably any decent mechanic would work.

Cars used to have a single coil and ignition module and use a distributor to feed all the cylinders. When the ignition module goes, the car stops.

Then came the 2 coils and 2 ignition modules. Some call these "cross fire".

Coil packs are coil and ignition module for each cylinder, usually built into a integrated unit. So if one goes, your car is still drivable.

Huge improvement.

I'm curious if its only with 99.5 cars and up. I mean i only bought mine with 1 key and havent tried to make more but i plan too. Lookin at the key it doesnt look like it has any sort of immobilizer chip in it. The owners manual has pictures of a normal key and one with an immobilizer chip in it and frankly mine looks nothing like the latter. I dont want to lock my car down and have tto go to the dealership to get it back up and running but i guess theres only one way to find out heh.

Anyway, TCS is what sold me on tha car too. I give it to my mom when road conditions are really bad since her commute is lonegr and she really likes that function. Not quite sure if shes gonna drive it when i lower it,put it on 18s and throw in a CAI and ypipe

99' with 55K no major break downs yet. Replaced left bank o2 sensor, right bank o2 sensor twice, before finding out that the KS was the cause. Other than that runs pretty tight.

You don't have to pay the crazy dealer price for coils either when they die. I replaced all 6 of mine last year for less than $300, brand new OEM...got them off eBay.

99 GXE with 112k miles, had it since 58k... I have never had a failure problem with my coil packs; however, when I heard about this problem (AND when I had a problem with a torn boot on one of the coil packs I junkyarded some other coil packs. Find a set that fits in a junkyard. You would be surprised. It's been a long time, but I am 100% positive I didn't pull my replacements directly out of a 99. I think I may have gotten them out of a DE-K (2000+) engine...
