Pointless to paint y-pipe?
Pointless to paint y-pipe?
About to install one on my buddies car and its a used aluminum y-pipe. Ive seen the paints in autozone that are ceramic based and say they withstand up to 1200F intermittently. Whats the odds going that its going to burn off... 4 to 1. I figure if we do the prep correctly and cure it how it says to it will hold up. I guess well experiment and if it works out well ill post some pics.
Um, yea it's pretty pointless...
a) you wont really be able to see it...
b) what difference will it make...none
c) The only prep you'd need to do is just wash it w/ soap and water, Ive painted a LOT of pipes

No we figured not to paint the flex section so that it can still do its job without being stiff and possibly causing more stress. But the main reason is because its already been used and we are in an area where we have some salty roads during the winter so figured it would help out and keep it from deteriorating quicker. Plus the stuff only costs like 4 bucks.
i gave my muffler and tip a quick shot with black engine enamel and its held up fine ever since. i didnt really do this due to rust, but more because my exhaust is an embarresment due to the 2 in. tip on it.
