No gains from Y-pipe?
I just had my stainless budget y pipe installed about three days ago. I reset the ecu and have no codes. It seems to run the same except a little bit louder now. When I press the gas more than half way I get this annoying buzzing sound almost like an exhaust leak. I inspected the install and everything looks tight. Is this buzzing sound normal or should I suspect a leak somewhere? Shouldn't I be noticing some extra power or is it too subtle to tell?

If someone else installed your y-pipe get them to check it to make sure it isnt leaking...
But as for the power... you can only let out as much air as you bring in, so if your intake is still restricting then your exhaust upgrades wont be as noticed.

It is not necessary to do both to feel the gains. They are not huge, but should be noiticeable.

And the buzzing sound is unmistakeable. I don't know if you call it bees in a can or what but it actually sounds like a rattle on a rattlesnake. It is quiet as stock as long as you keep off the gas pedal but when you hit it it gets really noticeable. It isn't too annoying and I expected there to be a different sound after I put it on but I was wondering if it was normal or not. Wouldn't an exhaust leak make noise no matter how hard you are pressing on the throttle? Like I said, I inspected it and everything looks screwed down tight.

I saw the dyno graph at motorvate.ca on the budget y-pipe but I'm thinking that maybe 97-99 or 98-99's are different in some way. That guy's 96 got 17+ whp, I would think that would be very noticeable.

Your hp-sensing sensor is broken.
the buzzing is most likely coming from the flex section, or something's not bolted down as tightly as it should be. Y-pipes are the best bang for your buck mod on a Maxima, and no, the 98-99 weren't made any differently power-wise from the 95-96..

Just add a popcharger and you should feel the difference there was a review and a dyno on one running just a popcharger with a y pipe getting a gain of 31 HP at 6,000 - 6,200 RPM
Red line is stock with a stillen cone intake and blue line with stillen cone intake and budget y pipe
Your only gonna notice gains above 3500

I installed my budget y-pipe on my completely stock engine last monday and i noticed the gains immediately. It is most noticeable in higher rpm's as said previously. There is a little more growl upon partial throttle but WOT is louder than stock. I too have a very slight (buzzing?) sound, especially when i accelerate heavily. I will check the bolts to make sure they are tight.
So i don't know how you wouldn't feel a difference...
You said you inspected it and it "looks" tight, but did you actually get the wrench on there and try to tighten it more? Just a thought...good luck.

bees in a can huh? All well. I'll deal with it. It does seem to have a little more pull in the upper rpm range maybe. It is hard to tell. Maybe I should just go ahead and get a jwt popcharger or something to go with it. I was trying to keep it quiet but I'll bet a cone filter would drown out the bees I'm not sure where I would put the air temp. sensor thats in the airbox or the "boost" lol sensor that is mounted in the snorkel on the intake.

The gains from a y pipe are not dependant on an aftermarket intake. I don't believe that for a second. I don't know why you didn't feel a difference after installing the y pipe, but I am almost certain that if you installed a popcharger you would feel no more power and just noise. You probably have just been imagining the gains from the y, and it doesn't meet your expectations in real life.

Either way...
How does it sound? Did you feel the gains? Do you have any mysterious buzzing sounds?

Put your stock y-pipe back on and you'll be able to tell the difference.

Hey guys, i'm getting a buzzing sound upon light acceleration under 2,000rpm. I can think of two things:
1. I did not install the hanger where the Y and cat meet.
2. One of the bolts connecting to one of the headers left some metal debris in the thread hole when i took out the stock Y and the bolt won't sit very good.
Whats the proper or best way to clean out the thread?
Someone give me some suggestions, i wanna get rid of this dreaded sound.
thanx

If you think about how much money you spent on the little things, installation included, you would realize that you could have just saved up and bought yourself a nice used kit. Nothing makes me more than the sound of a sequential blow off valve in my car....one day....

I would never boost this car. I'm not mechanically inclined enough to troubleshoot all the problems that would come with it. This is my daily driver and I just wanted a y-pipe and possibly a cone filter (without getting rid of the stock piping and resonator) just for a little extra power. Maybe it isn't worth it but I figured it might get me close to 20 whp and that would be noticeable. I think I notice a little extra power with just the y-pipe but no where close to 15-20 hp like they claim. I doubt the intake is going to make that much of a difference.
Most of what I have spent on this car is trying to upgrade my once bare bones GXE. I added SE five star wheels, sound system, spoiler, red/clears, DC clears on the front ect. I'm actually about done with this car. I'm going to tint the windows and add factory fog lights and maybe a popcharger but that's it. What's funny is that I have spent more on replacing the manual transmission and alternator than all of the other stuff combined

i had a same experience about exhaust leak but guy left the O2 sensor lil loose and bolts where your cats and ypipe goes together it was lil loose. i took it back and he made them tighter noise is gone so that might me your problem go tight them more
