Power steering line question

I was checking out my power steering tonight because one of the lines comming off the resevoir was leaking. I traced the line to the front of the radiator area and all i saw was a hose linking the two lines together. (the two that comes off the resevoir.) is there supposed to be a steering cooler there or was it an option or is that supposed to be like that ??

On my 97 SE, it's a snakey cooling tube that runs from the passenger side all the way across the front of the rad and back. I looked at the parts fiche, and it appears that from 95-99 there are a couple of variations on the size/shape of this cooling piping. But there is no indication any variation involved a finned cooler with end tanks.

You are missing the cooler. Its just an aluminum tube but I am sure it does help.

Here is a picture of the proper setup (valid for Max's mfr'd after 6/98).

I haven't seen one without it and I have had 4 Max's including a 2k2. Not sure where that diagram came from but mine is from the 99 FSM and it shows the aluminum one.

It's from Nissan's parts catalog, and if you read closely you will see this configuration only applies from 6/98 to 99. The FSM pictures do not get updated for little stuff like this. I could post pictures of the other variations of that cooler tube, but it's pointless.

If you want to install the larger tube, go ahead it probably won't hurt anything. My point is that the currently installed equipment sounds like it's 100% correct.
