aside from turning, do you notice it going over bumps and dips in the road? my upper strut mount was making rubbery/spongy noises as it was wearing out. try this: open the hood, watch the nut on the top of the strut as someone turns the steering wheel. if it moves side to side at all (other than simply rotating) then your upper mount is bad.

does it make the sound while turing the wheels without moving? if so, thats def upper strut bearings. they bind and release making noise when they're worn.

not sure how coilovers would affect it, but unless they're causing a problem of their own, this is the most likely diagnosis. they wear out, and with a 95 with originals they'd def. need to be replaced.

I agree with this.

I think I have one side or the other if you decide you need this.

Had same problem

I took it to the shop, but then it didn't make the sound for them! I replaced the stock struts with Illuminas and replaced the CV joints, and the problem has not returned. And, the car is much more enjoyable, may I add. Can't believe I waited to replace the GXE struts.
