Stick shift problem

My stick shift is not bouncing to the center where it supposed. when i pushed the stick shift all the way to the left, it stays there. The right side is just fine, it bounce the stick shift to the middle. Few questions, what do i need to replace? does it have a spring to bounce the stick to the middle? If it does, how do I fix this problem and how hard is it? Any input will be appreciated. Thank you.

You need a new return spring. It connects the shift rod to the support rod. You need to jack up the car remove the heat sheild from the cat and replace the spring. This spring is a few bucks from nissan.

i30ds, is it possible to remove the heatshield w/o disconnecting the cat from the F-pipe? Will there be enough room to fit 2 hands and a tool in there?

mine is pretty much the same problem. my shifter, when pushed to the left (1st and 2nd) will return nice and smooth. but when i push it to the right, it takes much more force and is not smooth at all. is this also the spring? (is there a spring for both sides?)

No, it is one spring.

The location of this spring is right above the cat to y-pipe connection, and is visible after removing the heatshield (5 bolts) from the undercarriage. Look at the 4th generation Modification FAQs, and search for the site for installing a short throw shifter. This site provides pictures of both where in relation to the car this area is, as well as a close up pic of the shifter assembly where you can see the spring that you need to replace. I might go find the link...
