Aftermarket Suspension shopping list - tell me what I need!
I'm trying to gather parts for my suspension that I just purchased. I bought KYB AGX struts and Canuck Motorsports Springs. Right now, that is all that I have. I know I need dust boots, so when I go to advance auto parts to order, which cars do I say I want them from again? The 95 Mustang and Miata or something? Thanks for your help.
By the way, am I going to need camber bolts for the drop? These are advertised as a 1.8"-2" drop, IIRC.
Lou
I'm also in need of replacing the upper part of the strut set-up, the piece that contains the three studs in which you fasten to the engine bay. Mine stripped when putting on my FSTB so I need to cut the studs. What is the name of this part?

Strut mounts is what that part is called.
You also should replace spring isolators (rubber pieces that keep the springs from making all sorts of crazy noises when they rub against the spring perches), strut bearings *MUST REPLACE*.
The aftermarket dust boots *KYB* are garbage. They'll disintegrate after 2 yrs. Just pay the extra money and get original Nissan boots, bearings and mounts. Think how long the original parts lasted - it's worth the extra money in this case. the KYB parts are just not as well made *IMHO* and when I do the work myself, the last thing I want is to have to do it again because of shoddy parts...
There is a website that lists ALL the various suspension components... it's in the stickies... I think it's on the Dallas/Texas Maxima Enthusiasts website... it might also be linked at the vqpower.com website.

I actually have that saved, but I was wondering what needed replacing.
Taken straight from that website: Description: These dustboots have their bumpstops pre-cut for lowered cars and are a great replacement if your stock ones are loose or torn.
This is describing the use of KYB dustboots. Is there going to be a problem when using the OEM dustboots that don't have the bump stops cut?
edit: that's actually from maxmods

cattman sells sets of all 4 boots for like 60 some bux....get KYB strut mounts from tirerack 30 bux each. i have no problems with them....get some isolators like njmodi said if the springs dont come with them my teins did....with 2" drop u should be ok without camber plates or bolts

I've been trying to get together all of the parts for my suspension, or at least know exactly where to buy them, and to be honest, I'm worried. To be even more honest, A lot of the components on the 4G suspension component website, because I've NEVER worked with supsension before, I don't recognize a lot of the stuff on this list.
A vendor is having a group deal on KYB Dust boots and mounts. The only reason why I'm hesitating to get OEM dust boots is the requirement of cutting the bump stops, something I obviously don't have experience in, and any googling attempts have found me many 4x4 sights, or don't show how/where/how much to cut off of the OEM bump stop. If someone can explain this process to me, I'd appreciate it.
Also, I know that replacing the strut bearings is a must. Are these included in the mounts, if I purchased the KYB Strut Mounts, or do these go somewhere else?
I found the part that I am in need of cutting (since I stripped the nuts installing my FTSB), and on that 4G suspension guide, they list it as the "bracket". My pdf FSM calls them a Strut Mounting Insulator Bracket. I'll attach a pic of the FSM to help illustrate my confusion. It's part #3 in the diagram.
With these KYB Strut Mounts, what parts on the diagram are replaced? The seller of my struts sent me his used "strut mounts", but in fact only sent me Part #2 in the diagram, which might be where my confusion for the term "strut mounts" is coming from. Basically, I'd like to make sure that buying these strut mounts will supply me with the bearing necessary, and the bracket that I will have to cut.
Also, when you guys were talking about the "spring isolators" and "misc. rubber pieces", it kind of sounded like you were referring to a minimal amount of parts. Looking at this list is overwhelming (the link at the top of the page), since as I've admitted already, I have NO experience with suspension. If one of you could tell me the parts/names of the items I need to replace as they appear on the list on this linked webpage, I would greatly appreciate it. Isolators/bearings/dustboots are top priority from what I'm picking up on, anything else on this list? Can I reuse a lot? ("dust boots" as we refer to them are called bumper assy/bumper suspens, right? Or which is it? Or do these differ front to rear?)
The bottom line is this: I have a very limited time to do my install, Spring break will come and go very fast, and I have many things I want to do to my car. On top of that, I might need to look into other schools, as well. I just need to have EVERYTHING that i possibly can have planned out and accouted for. I can't get stuck without a part that I need, which is why I'm asking for an exact list of the stuff I need...sorry that this is a pain. Since this post is a monster, I'll post the pic in the next post. Thanks again for any/all the help, I really do appreciate it.

That's exactly the link I posted - I was wondering which parts were the parts njmodi and MaximaSE96 referred to up above. I also had many other questions regarding different strut mounts, etc.
But thanks anyways

Quick bump before I head to bed.
I'm just trying to ready myself as much as I can so that this can go smoothly. There are some pretty specific questions in post #5 that if answered would help me tremendously.
Mainly: In the diagram, what parts would a KYB strut mount replace? I NEED to replace part #3 in the diagram, so what is included? Should I buy a rear set of strut mounts? (I only need to cut one side's Part #3 off when installing my suspension [the nuts are stripped], should I only replace that ONE, or both front, or all including rears?)
Referring to the 4G suspension page, what parts are recommended that I change? The necessities? Everyone seems to have a different name for the same parts, so there is some confusion on my end.
It would be easier to refer back to that post...I don't want to sum it up too much and miss some important things I was hoping to get advice on.

--------Yes they are if you buy the kyb mounts they come in a white and blue box and say kyb on it and it has mount and bearing.. mount beaing the metal part that u see sorta sticking up in teh hole around where u attached the fstb.. and in the hole in that metal piece is where there is a large bolt holding your strut to the car. PART #2 on the guide
You should jsut get the bearing form nissan and reuse the mount

BUMP. I hate to bump old Posts But this one Has been a good checklist for me.
HomerMAC: Questions on the 1- 14 List.
1. Are #5 & #14 actually the same part...
2. I have the KYB Mount/Bushing Kit from tirerack, Is that the #8 on your list. 8. front mount seals /spacers
3. On #6.spring isolators, i need 4 you say. now is that 1 for each wheel or 2 for each wheel? confused~ tokicoillumina setup im using.
4. #12 & 13#.Seating Rubber. 55034-31U00 & 55034-31U01. both parts on the list look the same... is one seat for the front and the other for back?
-will i HONESTLY need this?
I ordered this from tirerack so far....
-KYB Strutmount/bushing combo pack.
-KYB Rear Strut Mounts. <this part already came with the Illumina struts though.
-Dust Boots.
-Link Bushings.
-TokicoIllumina/spring kit.
Did the rear strut mounts from KYB @ tirerack come with the rear strut bearing too? or does the rear need one?
Thanks for any and all of your help. mwest.

1. well one is supposed to be the front mount bushing... i cant re check it... becuase welll... the website that it was based on isnt up... it says server filed when i cleikced the link.. PM me if u can get to the site a nd take a screens hot.. or soemthing... and ill tell you..
2. the mount seal is liek a little paper liek thing.. its very thin you can re use the OEM ones if there ein tact.. there orange... color.. its jsut to keep the mount form hitting the metal on the chass so ... really mroe of a noise prevention thing...
3.yes 2 for each wheel.. OEM uses one on each wheel that works great for OEM cause the spring is stretched out.. the shortneed sprigns make contact and hit each other in two places... putting this "isolator" on the coil above an dbellow the spring that makes contact weill prevent this little rattle ish noise people complain of... (you can also use very stirdy fluid hose... or liek gas line os oemthing liek that thats sturdy and made of rubber..)
4. well seating rubber is what the spring sits on.. without it you can have the spring slip... or also noise.. and well YES.. if ur old ones are good shape then your fine...
LAST BUNCH OF THINGS:
ahh yea im 90% positive they come iwth it... but its like 5-7 dollars at a parts store or the busings.... if it doesnt i mean.. dont sweat it... its just a rubber thing.. i mean... if it doesnt come with it.. then jsut run out or have ur mechaninc order it.. and knwoing that itts lik 7 dollars ... he/she cant rip you off...

the kyb boots are compleat crap, they rip apart in no time. i would recomend buying something else. i have used stock parts for all my installs and have never had an issue. i have used rancho boots which are $3 a piece. they will fit front and rear, but are a similar size to the oem rear boot.
if you want a good bump stop, buy a foam prgressive rate one. there are countless available. the rubber ones are just too stiff.
