Weird Sounds from Tranny. Please Help

So I've been riding on a slipping clutch for a while now. I finally have saved enough money and have ordered the part but I ran into a slight problem. I'm hearing this chatter when I am in neutral. When I press the clutch the sound is gone. When I begin to take off in 1st the chatter resumes and same for 2nd and than off to 3rd where you can bearly here the sound.

Reasons.
Could it be that I wore the clutch so bad that it is chattering?
Is it the flywheel? If so how does a flywheel get damaged?
Did I somehow broke one of the tooth from the pressure plate?

I need to know what this problem is before I install this clutch that way I could save more money to repair the additional problem. Or else I'll be spending money on the labor work twice.

Thanks.

Wasup Peter!

Sounds like you are having the same issue as this guy who started this thread. In this case, it's going to be your input shaft bearing. That means your transmission will have to be taken apart to get to it. You might as well have it rebuilt while its apart.

from what i was told and also from what the tranny shops told me that if the rattleing happens in gear or in neutral with out the peddle pressed it is usually the input shaft berring., or broken teeth in the gears inside the tranny. if it was the throw out berring it would raddle when you pressed the peddle in...

your having the same thing i am... found some one to replace the Tranny for 1800 if he cant fix it for less.. i wish i had the tools, lift and know how to do it my self but with the tranny, too meny things to mess up so i am having a shop do it

On the ad that you sent me s0ber do you know if i need anything else? is it just a straight up bolt on? it says somthing about the driver's side axle i don't know what this means. Can someone on the .org explain this too me?

It's the input shaft bearing in your transmission guy.

brought it to a good tranny shop and am getting my tranny rebuilt for 1350..

the gears were fine but most of the bearings were starting to pit and one was extreamly bad which was causing the unevenness causing most of the sound...

You will need to replace both axles and speed sensors. Everything else should bolt right up. BTW, this is in the mod faq.

My hommie owns a tranny shop in La Puente. I've known him since we were lil kids. He is very trustworthy. I can refer you to him and he'll be willing to do the work. They warranty their labor. However, swaps like this is a different story. I don't think any shop would warrant a swap because you are not replacing your tranny with another one that is made for the year of your car. But I am sure that my friend will work with you and won't shaft you. I can truely vouch for that.

When my tranny goes out, I'm going to do the same thing and take it to him.

I haven't read what is in the 4th gen FAQ with regards to this but if that's what it says it's another instance of the FAQs needing to be updated.

If you replace an open diff 4th gen trans with an open diff 5th gen trans you don't have to change anything. If you put an LSD trans in place of your open diff trans (regardless of if its a 4th gen or 5th gen) you have to change the driver's side axle only. The passenger side axles are the same between open and LSD cars. As far as the speedo sensor I've heard these 3rd and 4th hand rumors of people having to replace the speedo sensor etc etc... when I did my swap from a 95 open diff to a 2001 VLSD, the speedo sensor was not an issue and no change or anything was needed of that sort.

The post below shows that it is a VLSD tranny. That is why I suggested that the axles be change. I was wrong for referring back to the FAQ about replacing both axles. No need to replace the passenger-side.

You should really have this problem diagnosed professionally before you buy another transmission. I agree that it sounds like you have a bad input bearings in the tranny but you should know for sure first. If you do need a tranny and the one for sale is gone you can always check carpart.com.

Yea I will have this problem diagnosed. I called around tranny shops and some will check it out for me. I jsut haven't had the time because of my job. Some tranny places said it could just be that your clutch is really bad and the flywheel could have a lot of hot spots causing this problem. So I will have it checked out. Lets just hope its the bad flywheel or throwout bearing becuase I already purchased a new clutch.
