Trouble starting in Cold Weather

I"m seem to be having trouble starting the car in cold weather. Either the car would just rev and not fire up for like 5 secs. I'd then let it go, then rev it again for couple secs and feed it gas.. then it would start up.

When it does start to "start up" i hear a high pitch screeeeeeching sound like the belt too tight or something. That lasts for about 1 or 2 secs then everything is OK.

Is this starter problem? Or is it something as simple as the battery or belt too tight/loose?

Recently changed the oil/filter and change new plugs... problem still there.

What plugs did you use?

The cold start problem could be caused by a variety of things...e.g.

1. Bad ECTS (often the case)
2. Dirty TB or IACV
3. Leaky fuel injectors

Whats the maintenance history on other things (fuel filter, air filter, etc.)?

The screeching sound could be the starter or a loose belt (among other more obtuse things). Stand by the engine bay while someone starts the car. If the sound is on the passenger side of the bay, it's most likely a loose belt. If the sound is on the driver side of the bay, then it's probably the starter.

Man, thanks for the quick reply.

I used the NGK Copper Plugs. Dunno what the ECTS is... how do i check that?

Haven't changed the fuel/air filters in while. Might look into that.

Also had check engine light code from Autozone: P0450 - Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Malfunction. I think that's a non-factor with the starting problem though.

ECTS - Engine coolant temp sensor. check the stickies for info on replacement (it's easy) and cheap.

I don't think the EVAP system will cause hard starts - but I'm not sure.

Plugs should be fine.

Clean out the throttle body and IACV - check stickies.

I actually have the same problem.

Initially, I thought there was something wrong with my belts so I replaced both belts but still same problem.

I think I'm just going to drive it like it is for another few months and sell it or trade the car in.

I think generally Nissan/Infiniti is prone for these kind of problems. My brother had similar problem for his Inifinit G20.

Does anyone really think it is a problem with the starter? If so, I'll take it to the shop and get a new starter but want to make sure before I blow another 100 bucks.

Thanks

You could try rebuilding/regreasing the starter. It's easy and free.

Do you have a block heater? Might start easier if the engine is plugged in & warm.

sounds to me like the belts are just being noisy because they are cold.

I have a suggestion for the high pitch screech sound. I had a very similar problem. I would start the car up and this screech sound could be heard for about 2 secs. I changed the power steering fluid and that put an end to the screech sound.
The power steering fluid was dark red and almost brown. New power steering fluid is tan/clear in color now.
