it's the LSD thing. If you have an american sold maxima, you have a locking differential.

why are they even asking if its locking or non locking. You should just say I need an axle for driver side (or passenger side) Nissan Maxima AT with or without abs and thats it.

The locking/non-locking only comes into play if your putting another transmision in.

Don't mean to thread jack but I will also need to replace axles and was wondering if you guys thought it was really worth spending the extra $150+ on the Raxle axles? If so, why?

If you don't mind taking the chance of having to re-do the labor, the buy the lifetime warranty local axles. They are hit or miss and unfortunately, the miss % is quite high.

The raxles are quality products... you get what you pay for (especially in this case).

I like working on my car, but don't have the time to keep redoing the same fix over and over (i.e. keep swapping axles, starters, etc.), so I always opt for (what I consider) the better quality part - unless the price difference is prohibitive.

I appreciate the thread jack hahaha

Anyways, I found the answer.. look at the fire wall and get the tranny number. call ur dealer, give'em the number and they will tell you. It all has to do with the last digit but i forgot what letter means what. I have non locking and my car was shipped from Japan whole (according to carfax)

I knew I would here something about that..

I believe if the last digit is an A it is equipped with the non-locking diff.
If it's a V then it has the locking diff.

I just changed both axles on my wifes '98 SE, A/T with LSD or as some people like to call it, a locking diff.. I changed the pass side then a week later did the driver side, no problems. But according to what I read somewhere, if equipped with the LSD your suppose to remove the pass axle first then some clip inside so you can remove the driver side. I guess they were referring to the C clip, anyways it came out & went in with a bit of prying & pushing.
