Engine hesitation on pickup

I have a 96 Maxima SE automatic with 228K. Recent repairs include KS, O2 Sensors (all 3), EGR cleaned and Valve replaced, fuel and air filter, and also oil change.

Symptoms:
At city and highway speeds, the car will hesitate when stepping on the gas. Most commonly it occurs when I let up on the gas and then step on the gas either to speed up or maintain speed. There is no engine light or ghost codes.

We added Heat to the tank thinking there might be moisture in the fuel system.

My brother thinks it could be the coils. He has a friend with a 95 Maxima with similar mileage.

Has anyone encountered similar problems?

It could be a fuel delivery issue. With that many miles on the car, the fuel pump might be under-performing.

When was the fuel filter last changed?

You might want to put a fuel pressure gauge inline and see what the pressure is at when the car hesitates.

It could also be the coils, but the 95/96 coils are fairly robust and don't fail often. Of course with your mileage - anything's possible

I just changed the filter 1 week ago. Sometimes it hesitates other days it doesn't happen at all.

Possibly MAF as well. You don't know what the automatic transmission feels like? And I think hes talking about the hesitation before it downshifts.

I have that problem right now and I only have like 10k on my engine. (engine swap)

My mechanic says it could be a few things. Distributor or one of the coils went bad. MAF is also an option, but I'll find out tomorrow when I take it in.

For me... the hesitation is when i'm in say, 2nd gear (note I am 5spd) and i'm crusin say goin 25-30mph, rpms at 2,500-3,000 and then I accelerate hard, or even moderately hard, and it starts to go, then holds back, goes, holds back, then goooooooes. Pretty much does it in every gear, when accelerating moderately hard, to pedal to the floor hard... but when I'm not accerlating hard, it's fine.

Strange, that's why I'm bringing it in first thing tomorrow morning to get it checked.

I had an issue identical to this. It went on for about 6 months, and gradually it became a heavy miss under any application of throttle. One of my coils threw a misfire code, I replaced it and haven't had a problem since.

This is my exact problem. It's not at gear change as someone suggested.

I meant what does it feel like when the tranny starts to go?

We don't have distributors. And it could be a coil pack, but sounds like the MAF.

Here is a quick way to check the MAF sensor:

1. Engine warm, A/C off, tranny in neutral, no load.
2. Stick a pin in the white wire on the MAF sensor.
3. Hook up a DVM to this pin and ground.
4. At idle voltage should be 1.0-1.7V
5. At 2500RPM should be 1.5-2.1V

If voltage is lower than these values, the MAF is no good.
