DIY tint difficulty
DIY tint difficulty
Alright well i've been needing a tint for a while, and I can get it done very well through a friend for 100 dollars, but what about doing it myself? Ive found some writeups on the internet, but from anyone here with experience, do you think its a good idea to try it? Given a roll of film at autozone is like 12 dollars, I'm not too worried if i mess it up, but i figure its worth a try... Either way, shoot me some opinions!
take your windows off, and it really isnt hard at all...have to get the rear done Professionally tho. ImmasquashYou is the guy to talk to.. he did his, and they look professional. I need to do mine..
really? I've read that the rear is a MAJOR pain, but its still do-able. If it isnt it wouldnt be a problem to get it professionally done, but i figured it would all be do-able...
100 bucks is a great deal... That is one of those things (IMHO) best left to the pros... an amateur tint-job may look fine from a distance, but when you look up close, it's just not the same as the pros (the way the tint is cut, etc.).
Plus, it's a pain to remove if you end up being unhappy with it... if you need another local source, talk to hectorc - he has hookups..

Alright, I guess i'll just go pro. The guy does INSANELY good tint, and my friend is a repeat customer, and a good friend of him, so yada yada yada, i can get it for 100. thanks for the info!

no probs...
not hard to do yourself, just get some quality tint and not that autozone crap and it makes it so much easier. The rear window on a 4th gen is not to hard to do, its not like a VW bug, those are like tinting a ball. Should be able to one peice it easy and if not just seam it on the defroster line and and overlap a bit as the tint will shrink as it dries.
I did my whole car and it was a pain (old 92). And let me tell u, prep work is everything. As long as u lay the tint from a corner and work ur way down with the angle of the glass u wont get bubbles, however the window has to be perfectly clean in order for the tint to cure the to glass poperly and for it to look good. Cleaning the glass with a rozor blade does the trick. If your gona do it yourself there is online companys that sell precut tint, you just type in your year make and modle and they have machine cut tint sized for your windows, this is HUGE, cutting tint is difficult. http://www.tintmatrix.com/ is just one company i found.
If u have the patience and really want to give it a shot, precut is the way to go. However, with my experience with tint, ill never do it myself again. 100 BUX IS A STEAL!

Having tried the rear and failed miserably, I would say that the rear is NOT "doable" unless you have some tricks of the trade. It is THAT hard to get right and downright frustrating to attempt. Worst still is that getting the stuff off damaged my defroster lines. The sides on the other hand are easy and easier still with the door panels off.

it cost $75 for just my back window. I tinted the rest of the car by myself. I tried the back, but i failed. I honestly have no idea how the professionals do it. I mean i guess that's why they're professionals. Like mendon said, i took off all my windows n did it. Wasn't that hard to do once the windows were out. But my friend who worked for a body shop told me that the tint that they use is super thin. N the film that i get is pretty thick. This is why i cannot do a one piece with the tint i get. N if i WERE to get the super thin tint, i might as well let them do it since it'll prob save me like only $10.
This is how i get the tint off. Back window ( i woudln't recommend since it'll prob pull all ur defroster's off.
But for every other window. just pull the tint off. Use a razor scraper, its just a lil tool that holds the razor blade. Spray windex on ur window keeping it wet n the just scrape off all the gunk. Don't be afraid to use some pressure, n don't worry about sratching ur window, the razor blade most likely will break before that can happen
