Whistle in heavy traffic when at a stop

I need you're help again guys. I get a high pitched whistle from the left side of the car in the belt area. The whistle seems to come most often when i'm in heavy traffic. It always appears when I come to a stop, and as soon as I press the accelerator it goes away. I know it's not the alternator since it was replaced 2-3 years and I had it tested a month ago and the voltage was perfect. I did install new belts a month ago, could that be causing it? Could it be the water pump?

Car is a 95 GLE 87k miles.

I installed new belts a month ago, could it be that I need to adjust the tension because it stretched?

The belt side of the engine is the right side.

Check the vac hoses, the small rubber ones. I had exactly the same symptom on my Sentra. It was the short rubber tube connecting to the (EGR valve? Not sure..) Anyway, part of the emission control system. It had become gunged up inside with oil deposits and the rubber was all gooey. The reduced aperture was making it act like a penny whistle. I replaced the tube and the whistle disappeared. Cost: Zero. Test for this by pinching the rubber tubes (engine running) and if one is partially blocked, you should find it quickly enough.

is it rpm based? If you rev does the whistle go away or get louder?

If it goes away, I'd say the alty is prepairing to kick the bucket.

As soon as I tap the gas the whistle goes away. The alternator has perfect voltage and it was replaced, I don't think that's it.

I experience this also but it goes and comes (on and off for about 1 and change now).

I thought it was my alty seeing as how the noise was comming from that area. Was going to test my alty. My belts are bad so I thought it could be that as well.

Take some spray lube (WD-40, PB Blaster, ect....) that you can get good aim with. While its running gently spray a little on each belt one at a time. If the noise goes away on a certain belt the belt is either bad or the tension is incorrect. If the noise is still there try to direct the spray towards the center of each pulley one at a time. Bad pulleys can also make a noise like you are describing. If you spray one of the pulleys and the noise goes away then replace the pulley. In some cases the whole component (alternator, p/s pump, or a/c compressor) has to be replaced. If you really get stuck on it have a shop look at it.

I can guarantee you 102% its your water pump. Hard to believe but true. Do a search for whistling noises.

I had the same whistle you describe and it drove me nuts for 6 months.

Simple test.....take off your belts when its warm.

I guarantee you you will still have the noise with the belts loosened/removed.....

Its your waterpump. Not too hard of a job either

69CHARGER_RT , I noticed most members have problems with the whistle in a certain RPM range this seems different. Did you have the exact same problem (goes away once you tap the gas)? I'm asking because I would like to avoid replacing the water pump at all costs since it is a bit of an expensive fix.

Yes, only when hot and at idle...as soon as the throttle is blipped, the whistle would stop, then return as soon as the car returned to an idle rpm.
Very loud, high pitched......almost like a vacuum leak or a tea kettle whistle.

Like I said before it drove me nuts!!

Good luck. Change your thermostat as well while you're in there

for me the whistle was always present as long as rpms were under 1K, once it reached above it, it would go away.

a teat kettle at full boil is pretty much the sound.

Tried what a poster mentionned today. Once the car started whistling I took a can of WD-40 and sprayed it on the belts, it was dark so I don't know which belt it was, but the good news is the whistling stopped. I'll have my tension reajusted and I'll see if that solves the problem.

My car only whistles with partial throttle. Someone said the butterly has to much of a gap and you should adjust that then adjust your tps to compensate. Ihavent done that yet.

Thinking of finally changing the water pump since that's the best lead I've had so far. I got an alternator cheap, changed it, and the whistle is still there. Very annoying since it almost always happens in traffic. Before I do this (since it's such a pain) anybody would have any other suggestions?

Thanks for your suggestion anyways. Like I said it's a whistling that comes from the passenger side of the engine, goes away as soon as I press the accelerator.

The intake whistle sound is hearing the vacuum lines in the intake reverberate. This usually occurs part-throttle. Put the airbox back in and the sound will be muted. Sorry to go OT but I thought I would mention.

Wow i got on the .org to get some help with a few problems and looks like everyone is having them. I'm fairly certain my alternator is about done, but would like a second opinion. Ok i have a whining noise coming from the general area of the alty. When i have my headlights on, they go dim at idle, but get brighter when i hit the gas as the noise gets louder. I've actually had a few ppl ask if my Max is supercharged lol. Occasionally it will hesitate to start, or completely shut off....for instance, last night i was coming up to a stop sign. As i approached, i pushed in the clutch and started braking. When i was almost stopped, the car completely shut down: headlights, radio, engine, everything and wouldn't start again for about 5 minutes. Every time i turned the key, the headlights went extremely dim and i heard a fast-paced clicking sound. The previous owner of my car most likely didn't have much knowledge of anything about the car from the appearance of some of the things i see were done: he had a stereo hooked up which most likely contributed to the death of the alty.

One more question, and i aplologize for the long post: When my headlights are on, whether on high or low beam, the high beam light on the dash stays on. I know the previous owner installed some cheapo Silverstar bulbs, but i don't understand exactly why? Oh well tho, i'm gonna get myelf an H.I.D kit for X-mas i hope.
