Tach not working
I'm having a weird problem. As you can probably tell my tachs not working. This might be kind of long so I suggest that you only read this if you might have a solution or if you have or have had the same problem. Just to save you from wasting your own time.
OK, here it goes. My tach isnt working most of the time. It works for about 3 minutes once a week, if that. But its not just staying at 0 or bouncing around or anything. The needle will start around 0rpm and slowly move around the dial, very slowly. On my 45 minute trip to school it will start around 0 and by the time I get to school it will be around 7-8000rpm. Then when I shut the car off it will drop back down like it should. If I immediately turn it back on it will go to where it left off. If it sits for a while it will be back at 0 when I start it. I checked to make sure its plugged in. I'm getting no sensor codes, except a KS code, but no CEL. So I'm lost. I asked the parts manager at a dealer and he said he'd never seen that before, and this guys always been real helpful even though I never let them touch my cars. So could it be the tach? Or what sensor should I look for. I've never had a distributerless car so I'm not sure where a sensor would be for the tach. If its just the tach itself then I can replace that, just hate to buy one and it not be the problem. I appreciate any response.

I knew you had a 95 when reading your post. 95 nissans have ALL KINDS of tach problems. It was a bad year for the tachometer. You're like the 10th one I heard of. Replace the tach. Go to www.pinnaclenissan.com. You can buy a used one but then you'll keep having the problem over and over again. Nissan knows there's a problem with the 95 tachs which was obviously corrected in later models.

95 Nissans had horrible tachometers but the years after didnt. Get an instrument cluster from a junkyard for 60 bucks and swap out the tach. You'll be good as new.

Well I have a 96 and it does the same thing. I was hoping the signal wire was grounding itself out. I guess not. Also just to let you know the ECM supplies the signal to the tach. I looked it up because I was wondering where the signal came from also.

I have a '96 and my tach does the same thing. It works for a few minutes, and then nothing. It doesn't even go anywhere. Sometimes it jumps around too. It has a real mind of it's own most of the time. I played with the circuit board, resoldered everything, messed with the variable resistor, but still nothing.
