Future Project

Future Project
Hey guys...I have a project that I'd like to slowly get started on as it gets warmer. I have a parts Maxima with a 73kmi motor in it and I'm stripping the car this spring (ebaying alot of, selling some on here, but keeping the engine and tranny). Well, my project is...while I have the engine out (I'm going to store it in my garage while I have no use for it) until my current one (170kmi) starts acting up...what should I change if anything. I already plan to clean it up nice and good, but is there anything I should consider changing? I'm not into performance mods so I'm not really headed in that direction. I just want a motor that will be in extremely "fit" shape and very durable when I actually put it in. However, if you guys think I should just clean it and put it in when it's time...then that's cool to. Also, what conditions should an engine be stored in? Certain temperatures, etc.
I read these two threads but noticed these were geared more towards performance work:

Thanks guys. I love the Org.

are you talking about what to do to the 73k mile engine from the parts car? cuz the VQ is actually pretty decent as it is. if you aren't interested in mods so much, then, correct me if i'm wrong, you probably don't drive it too hard. in which case, the stock block is probably more than enough to last as long you need, given correct maintenance, including preventive. storage probably isn't a big deal. make sure you drain all the fluids, perhaps. actually, maye not since gaskets would dry out then? someone chime in on this. not sure myself.

Well I don't drive like a grandma...maybe once a day or once every couple of days I'll push it for a few seconds. The stock power is enough for my liking...I'm more into looks. But still, I want a nice running engine...is there anything I should check when I get that engine out? That car was purchased from an auction...I only got to drive it a little bit from the auction when the tranny gave out so I didn't get a total feel for the engine.

Do a visual inspection when it is out and tell us what you see. If you see signs of oil leaks coming from the valve covers, you need new valve cover gaskets with new plug O rings. Look at the UDP, see if there are any signs of oil leak behind it. Visually inspect the engine block, if it runs smoothly now, you probably don't have to worry about anything. But if you really want to, for peace of mind, do a compression check but I really doubt that you need to do that. While the engine is still in the car, see if you can pull any codes from the ECU and go from there.
Where to store it? You said you have a garage, store it there. How to store it? Put it on a crate. You can drain the oil out of the engine if you want to. Just remember that when you put it on your car in the future to add motor oil in it.
