Air Compressor

Ok well I'm driving to work and my battery light and brake light turn on. My car is still running so I pull into a parking lot and pop the hood to look and notice that the alternator belt is not there anymore. I then take my car to firestone to have it checked out and they tell me that my A/C compressor locked up causing the belt to snap. They then tell me its going to cost me $1400 to get back on the road. They say that they need to replace the A/C compressor for the alternator belt to work for the alternator to work. Now a friend told me that I could bypass it with a smaller belt to get it to work. But I wasn't sure and haven't gotten another mechanics opinion. I was hoping anyone out there had any experience with my problem or just understand it to give me any advice before I jump $1400 in the hole.. Appreciate the help.

I have had this problem as well it is possible to bypass the Ac compressor I used a gates belt micro v ko60465 not the perfect fit but pretty good if it were 1 inch shorter it would be perfect but it will work well I ran like this for 3 months till I got the parts to repair my ac.

I'm a mechanic, and will tell you that the above post is correct. You can easily bypass the compressor using a smaller belt, so I would have that done in the meantime and just run without A/C. It's winter anyway $1,400 seems a little high to me though to fix everything. The compressor is VERY easy to change it's only held in by 4 bolts (all easy to get to) and the A/C line. What sucks is the compressor itself I believe is like a $600 to $800 part

I looked for the gates belt micro v ko60465. I tried finding the product on the net but couldnt find the listing of "60465" anywhere. But found the micro v belts but not that exact one. If anybody can tell me where I can locate this belt would be greatly appreciate it. If on the net or locally. Thanks a lot.
