Is it the knock sensor?

Most of the time my 95 SE (186,000 mi) runs great. Recently the check engine light came on. ECU diagostic showed a bad knock sensor. My car is sputtering and even stalling from time to time. I have a new knock sensor that I will install, but I'm wondering...will replacing the knock sensor take care of the occasional sputtering/stalling??

The KS will not set the CEL. Go check and get ALL the codes, then report back.

I had similar problems with my 95SE (125K miles). Finally a code was thrown and it said it was the MAF Sensor. Replaced that with a new/old stock from eBay and the car has been rock-solid since. Keep your eye out for a MAF sensor b/c when this fails, it could leave you stranded. Bought mine for $200 (NEW, not used) but I've seen them for as cheap as $75 (NEW not used).

Then it's time for a new KS. I still recommend you go to autozone and have them pull the codes.. just in case.

Does autozone charge for that service?

Also, someone else mentioned the air flow sensor. At one point I got a code for that, but now it doesn't come up. Could that be the reason for the stalling/sputtering?

The MAF is porobably the cause of the sputtering.

After I ret the ECU, the Check engine light went off. Then the car sputtered and the light came on...code says MAF. Thanks for the heads up.

My 95 GXE idles rough sometimes. Got knock sensor code. Could it also be massflow sensor?

i also pulled the KS code, been having trouble starting lately. idle in park or neutral is solid, but once i put it into D the rpm's drop and the car starts vibrating. would the KS alleviate these issues? or am i looking at other problems also? no other codes were pulled.

Don't be in a hurry with the knock sensor job. It's often triggered by another problem code like MAF. Wait until you are getting KS code all by itself - and since it won't set the CEL, that means checking the codes when nothing appears wrong.

When my MAF sensor went bad, the car could NOT stay running when it was exhibiting the problem. I had to blip the throttle CONTINUOUSLY while trying to get the car rolling (5-speed). Once rolling, if I stepped on the gas, it would die, kind of like there's too much gas and/or air. The car was almost undriveable.

Occasionally, before it got worse, I would be cruising at highway speeds and feel an occasional 'miss'. It got my attention but it wasn't continuous.

Hope this helps in terms of symptoms.

I had this problem for a while. Make sure the air filter is properly seated and that the case is closed tightly. That stopped the shakes for me.

I got a 0304 and a 0115 (right bank running lean) and i put the 470k resistor on there and reset the ecu and so far 3 days and no codes. Could it be that the KS was causing the 0115? hmm......
