How reliable has your Maxima been?
bought car with high 90Kmiles on it, now have 129K
i've gone through 2 transmissions since I got it. The real things I've had trouble with was a fusible link in my car that would gain/lose signal causing my car to not start. took a while to track it down but not a big deal.
other than that just the usual brakes, sensors etc
over its been pretty reliable

I have a 96 with 164k miles and I have never had a problem with the engine itself. It still runs great, only things that i have had to replace on it are the usual; starter, alternator, spark plugs, cv joints, and belts.
well, mine had mechanics stumped for 4 months....o2 sensor was bad, but they had to reset the computer to make it work but since they couldn't figure it out i replaced a bunch of other stuff too trying to figure it out...car would go to 2k rpm and just bounce off it.
other than that, just a water pump and other normal stuff (brakes, tires, etc.)

I've got a 1996 with 175,000 miles on it. One of the A/C lines has a clog in it, the A/C fan ticks, the doors randomly lock and unlock, the rear passenger door doesn't even have power to it so the window and lock on that door doesn't work, the knock sensors been replaced, it has a gas leak that nobody can seem to find, the hood struts are shot, something's clunking in the front end when I hit bumps, the check engine lights been on since I got the car. Throwing some emissions error, I can't remember what the codes were. That's all I can think of for now.
My 96 GLE has 148k miles, i've had it for about a year and a half, not too many problems. Only real problem was a coolant leak. The other problems were as a result of me messing around with it, good learning expereince though.
Reliable!
I had my 89 SE for 13 years. We taught both our daughters to drive on it (manual tranny).
In those 13 years we replaced a few maintenance items like mufflers and pads.
How many miles? 130,000.
When I sold it, it had the original clutch and shocks.
I just got a 97, and I hope I'm as lucky!

damn sure is reliable, a 99 car bought on 2003, only oil changes, spark plugs, fuel filter, and brake pads just for safety...right now running harder than ever after some mods of course
It has eaten one gear because of wheelhop and one because of 6.5k straight dumps on slicks. I also snapped an axle. Axle seal. Knock Sensor. Is all. Roughly 122,000 miles. VQ35-powered since 116,000. 250 timeslips.
1996 Max, bought with 120k, now has 160k. Replaced/fixed:
1) Hoses
2) Belts
3) Clutch
4) Brake Pads
5) Rotors
6) Water Pump
7) Timing chain tensioner
8) Axles
Considering all listed above was just normal maintenance, I would have to say I am very happy with a car with 160k on it. No major problems ever!

Hate turns to Love
95 GXE Bought in October 2004 for $2500 with 180K miles, now has 198K miles.
Soon after buying:
2 fuel injectors
coolant sensor
trans flush (old fluid came out black) car shifts smoothly now... used to jerk
rear brakes/roters/tires
small coolant leak (mechanic still can't locate it)
fuel line leak
Check engine light has always been on.
Recent:
Fixed resistor for fan speeds 1 through 3. (easy fix thanks to the forum faq's)
Fiance backed into a metal dumpster (creating an ax like dent in trunk lid and made the spoiler fly off) and now I'm looking for another lid to replace it! Anybody got a gold lid for sale?
At first the car frustrated me, and I wanted to sale it due to one problem after another (you get what you pay for). But now that everything is working fine, it has been very reliable, and I've grown to love it!
Best mpg 29 worst 16.

The only reason i got a 4th gen after my 3rd gen died was becasue they are reliable as hell. Wans't too crazy about the cars in general but when you work on cars all day the last thing you wanna do is work on your own. Things like brakes, tires, suspension parts/mounts, and fluids aren't considered to be factors that make a car unreliable....they are all wear and tear items. I've only had to replace my alternator (which i probably killed with my amps sucking about 200 amps of juice) and the oil pressure switch. Got about 122K on it now and no problems.
'99 SE >> 131k (purchased w/24K) & going strong.
Only "non-maintenance" items have been antenna shaft (100K) and alternator (72K). Plus, of course, the spoiler is coming apart (thank you Gorilla Glue) CV boot was ripped one time (subsequently replaced), but that was unseen road debris, I presume, that ripped it)
I ain't complainin'.

Today is my one year anniversary of getting my maxima. IN the past year I put about 10K on it (96K total). I had to fix the following:
Clutch $180 P/$340 L
Axles $200 P/L
Radiator $200 P/L
Water Pump $460 P/L
Knock Sensor $70 P
Maintenence
Spark plugs, air filter, fuel filer, oil changes, etc
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I've got a 97 Maxima GLE. Bought it last year with 75k miles on it:
All Belts needed replacing @ 85k
All Four Disk Brakes Replaced @ 85k
Stock Stereo Needed to be fixed (something broken with the tape deck portion) @ 95k
Climate Controls Illumination went out @96k
Both outer C/V Boots were split & needed replacement @ 111k
Check Engine Light came on for a couple of days, but hasn't come back since.
Emergency Brake Light has come on @ 113k don't know why that is.
Other than that it's all small stuff here & there. Car's been good to me for the most part. Currently @ 113k & going strong.

Just bought my '96 Auto Max and since have only changed to synthetic oil. The speakers were stock in the car and were completely shot. I pulled the door off and the foam from around the edges of the speaker just fell out of it. lol. Replaced those with Alpine type-s speakers. It needs a new transmission and a DS axle. The CV joint is making all kinds of knocking noises. The car only has 97,000 miles on it but I am almost certain it needs a KS. Which really sucks.
Put on 60,000kms since we bought it a few years back, only thing that went wrong was the evap cannister, the fuel door cable snapped, and supposedly the passanger side airbag is faulty but a quick airbag light reset fixes that
Other than that, it's all been regular maintenance (oil changes etc)

I have approx. 84,000 on my 1999 maxima GXE. Besides general maintenance, I have done the following:
New Eibach springs to lower it
New struts and shocks.
Replaced 2 batteries (In AZ., the heat kills batteries quickly).
K&N Air filter (just put this in).
16 inch rims and tires.
I have not had any electrical, sensor, engine or alternator problems (and I hope it stays that way)! I hope to keep it at least 4 more years.

95 owned since new 122,000
My 95 has had 3 sets of plugs, 1 fuel filter, 3 O2 sensors, 1 crankshaft posistioning sensor, shocks all around, and due again soon, front pads twice, new rotors, once, 1 starter, 2 batteries, cv joints and axles, 2, and soon to be 3 sets of tires, oil and filter changes (various synthetic brands) air filter changes, 1 knock sensor, a muffler and various bulbs. I have belts to put on it when the weather breaks.
What has broken and doesn't work, well really nothing. The windows go up more slowly than they did when new, the paint is a bit faded, and it will need ball joints or tie rod ends or both soon.
This has really been the best car I have owned. Before this I had and 89 VW GTI 16V. Nothing but nickle and dime trouble. I am shooting for another 50,000 miles and that should do it.

95 maxima
I just bought a 95 maxima with, GET THIS 171,000 miles. This car runs like a beast and is pretty clean, has remote start, detachable feace radio w/remote. I feel like the president with this car and it runs like a champ, I have never owned a car this fast. what preventative maintenance should i do
OH i paid $3000 for it just for those who are wondering. i've learned how to check the "check engine" light codes, and have also learned how to reset the check engine light. The check engine came on and gave me the following codes.
1.Knock sensor
2.front right o2 sensor
I called auto zone and a very educated guy told me a lot about the sensors and basically stated they are not a SERIOUS problem. So, i reset the check engine light and check engine light has not came back.
questions:
1.what preventative measures should i take for my maxima?
2.should i have these sensors replaced?
Thank u all so much . I've already fell in love with this car and i want to keep it as long as possible. WELL, long enought to save up cash for a brand new one.

I have had my maxima for only a few months now and i bought it with some problems including a bad fuel pump, knock sensor, idle motor and leaky oil sump and it still ran through those problems for the month that it took me to earn the money for it without slowing down in the least...its still faster then most of my buds cars and trucks which i rub in their face often... i doubt you will find many people that have had trouble with the maximas as long as everything as been maintained...what are some other things that would need to be changed if i were to add a turbo?
I have 235k original miles on my 96 SE and it has been very reliable.
At 230k, I had to get a new Max since the rust has gotten
to the entire exhaust system.
At 200k, I replaced the starter.
At 190k, major parts began to wear out. I replaced
water pump, driver side axle, and thermostat.
At 170k, the dash electrical began acting up.
Of course, I've kept up with the maintenance and used synthetic
oil and 93 octane. If it wasn't for rust, I would be driving it everyday.

Actually it needs tires & cvboots but I knew that when I bought it. The hood shocks are worn out, I have replacements just haven't installed them yet.
