How reliable has your Maxima been?

I rarely post in these forums. I was just curious how reliable your Maxima has been to you? My Passat has given just so many problems, it isn't even funny! It is a 1.8T totally stock, driven carefully and maintained carefully! It is a year 2000 with only 36000 miles on it. So far it has had the following issues:

MAF went out
Coolant temp went out
diverter valve out
transmission jerking
now recently
secondary air pump (for emissions) - $400 part
Kombi valve - $150 part
vacuum lines - cheap
turbo oil leak - who knows?

Now for my Maxima:
1997 with >80K miles. Aftermarket turbocharged ... what have I had to replace due to failure?

O2 sensors (due to turbo likely)
clutches (due to beating on it)
transmission - only cuz it's turboed.
Tires (don't count general wear)

I have beaten on my Maxima soooo hard and it still puts up with it! I love my Maxima!

I just needed to vent!

Got mine used at 137k...I'm at 151k now and so far nothing has gone wrong except a ball joint. (Knocks on wood) No KS problems and no Coil problems (yet lol)

I've owned my 95SE, 5-speed, since day 1. It has just over 62,500 mostly highway miles on it.

To date:

New battery
Replaced oil pressure sender
Replaced left front headlight
Right rear caliper seized as a result of not using parking brake for years - replaced both rear calipers and brake pads
Replaced 02 sensor on warranty about 7 years ago
Replaced tires in September
Replaced wipers twice

That's it! The front brakes are original as are the OEM spark plugs. The car runs like brand new.

great to hear thats all you needed to replace, and yep, thats a VW for you, my family has owned 2 and nope, NEVER again. my convinced my mom trade her VW-turd in for a Murano.

my maxima has been very reliable, best car i've owned i think, its my 4th car, its been better or tied for the best car than everyone in my family's.. if that made sense... My gf's 99 however, some problems and the thing only has 70k miles, mine has 150k. 97 FTW

only real problems ive had on my 97 worth mentioning are:

-crankshaft sensor
-cylinder #2 coilpack
-muffler replaced (mine had a hole from NE rust)
-evap stuff, 02 sensor haven't fixed yet

but thats it, pretty good IMO, i have put 50k miles on the car since i bought it. Ive replaced more than that, but thats all i've really been required to replace

rome, did you get the alt recal? or pay for it outright

My 1996 I30t has been awesome, mostly just general maintence and a few mods. At 130K I have changed starter, battery, struts, and exhaust. Best car I ever had, by far. Most of the stuff I changed was just because they were original.

262,000 miles

ABS system replaced
knock sensor
shocks
starter (number 3)
cvs boot (I think)

Still get about 30 mpg highway and 26.9 around town.

Can't think of a better car to own.

I'm at 140k, driving year-round in PA. (Salt in winter, potholed roads, mixed driving)

So far:
- Alternator (replaced under recall by dumb luck)
- Starter (was getting noisy but never stranded me)
- Camshaft position sensor
- Battery
- Differential Carrier Bearings
- Muffler is rusting out real soon
- Seized parking brake cables
- Strut tower bearings
- Normal maintenance - brakes, plugs, fluids, etc.
- Bose Stereo amps

I've replaced a wholelotta other stuff either because I couldn't pinpoint the problem, or because I was 'in there' and knew it was a good investment. Stuff like balljoints, CV boots, control arm bushings, tie rods, wheel bearings, etc.

I own two identical sets of them, my original 97 GLE with 310,000KM (lots of commuting) and a 2nd (same trim) for the wifey (bought used 150,000KM).

Aside from normal wear and tear (wheel bearings, spark plugs, filters, front struts, brakes, belt, exhaust, battery, alternator, minor electrical issues) the cars have been friggin unbelievable. They start every morning and just go, go, go.. I've owned a Honda Accord and that's the only thing that can compare to them reliability wise. I've come across some Max owners that have had all kinds of issues but in almost all cases they bought theirs abused or drove them into the ground. You have to keep up with maintenance, specially on fluids and filters. Stick with premium gas and you should be set.

One thing I love about Maximas is paint durability. I see very few of them
around town with rust unlike Hondas, Toyotas, and almost every domestic car out there. The black paint on my higher mileage 97 still sparkles till this day.

I have replaced:
brake pads

but I have to change the front rotors, exhaust is starting to rust away, and maybe trans

that is about it.

have to do the maintence soon.

bought with 110 now at 122

both axles
driver side ball-joint
60K maint. (would be done with ANY car)

I usually do one project a weekend and they mainly are to keep the car at 100%. I have not spent very much money maintaining this car and I have the org to thank for that. I too agree that this is one of the best cars to own.

One thing I forgot about: I had to have the A/C coolant recharged in the summer of 2003.

In the 30,000km I've had my car the only thing to go has been an oxygen sensor. Apart from that just maintenance (brakes, spark plugs, etc).

Hmm you look like the odd one out. Sorry to hear that.

My A/C is a little flaky in the heat of summer but that's about my only complaint. The only other thing that has gone bad for me is engine flooding on a cold day if I stalled it with stock ECU, it would be extremely hard to start.

just wanted to chime in, even though mine is an oldie. My car has had its share of minor problems, like vaccuum leaks, A/C compressor going out, transmission issues, but overall its been good. The fourth gens I have been around are pretty reliable cars as well

KS, o2 sensor, coilpack, both axles. It had 102,000 when I got it in July '05, now it has 114,000. I think that's pretty reliable for an almost 10 year old car.

axles, alternator, shocks, inner, outter tie rods, both lower control arms, spark plugs, and normal wear and tear. usually when a stock part breaks, like my shocks and springs were shot i got aftermarket stuff to replace it with. oh and my KS went bad too

The knock sensor and coolant temp. sensor are about it for me. Just general maintenance otherwise. I'm over 120k miles, though, so you could almost consider those maintenance

I have a 95 GXE with 120K bought new. Other than standard maintanence I have replaced the following:

1) Alternator (died after 8 years of powering a 400W amp)
2) Starter
3) CV boots (both sides)
4) Rear window regulator
5) Power antenna rail gear
6) O2 Sensor (under warranty)

I'd say for an eleven year old car that $500 worth of repairs is pretty damn good.

It's a gladiator!

Got mine 10yrs old with 90K had to replace clutch & tires. Put new shocks on anyway. Done the usual brakes, filters, oil, wipers.
6years later (odo went out a while back so no miles) I have to do the KS, & IACV.

Gotta say this has been my favorite car ever - so much fun to drive.

Bought a 98 2 years ago, wife has a 93 and her father has a 92. Since I bought it used I immediately replaced the fuel filter, transmission flush. Since then spark plugs, both front axles (torn boots, was told just as cheap to replace axles), K&N air filter, brakes, tires, wind shield wipers, new stereo, rear speakers (blown after new stereo installed), PCV valve (replaced when I bought car), oil filters.

To be fair I bought the car at around 75000 miles and it's at about 92000 now so it had a lot of miles (was a rental car, so you know it was put through it's paces).

My wifes Max is at almost 130 thou and her father's might have turned over or be at 180 thou. It was the durability of the cars that made me buy mine for about $7500. I plan on keeping it until the world blows up or it becomes to expensive to maintain.

I think it's getting close to the time where it's going to need a lot of replacements to make it another 100,000 miles just from wear and tare

Bought my 95 GLE in Sept. 2005 with about 115000 for only $3500. It now has 119000 and is still going strong. I have not had any problems at all. Never broke down, never stranded, always starts.

mom have a 96 se: probs so far = coolent temp sensor, an 02 sensor, KS sensor, and TPS sensor. Also one wheel bearing is bad (loud humming noise on highway). Its been like this for about 1/2 year now and its very driveable besides the occasional multi start ups on cold mornings and now as fast as a 4 cylinder camry. Milage is 100,000 ish.

i have a 96 gle and everything is mechanically good because previous owner had pretty much done all the maintanance and the common fixes. Mileage is 103,000 ish.
