The front of the cross member on my car is all rusted out.
(The part that bolt on to the front of the chasis)
Somebody told me I need to take care of that.
What are my options?

thx

Option #1 - Replace it

Option #2 - Leave it alone

What do you mean by rusted out? Is it rusted through? (like holes) Or is there a topcoat of rust but its still structurally sound?

When I had my crossmember off before, the area uder where the crossmember presses into/the part of the frame that it bolts to was all nasty and deformed. I wondered how it still holds the engine up.

-no holes just a lot of rust, structurally sound? I hope!

Jack up the engine under the oil pan so the weight is off the crossmember. Then remove the crossmember. Grind the area where you see rust until you see bare metal. Then spray 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of black paint. You should be good.

Interesting that this problem has emerged today because I discovered the bolts that hold this frame member are stripped and I must figure a way to fix the problem by welding into the frame.

Does anyone on the org have any experience with this type of problem?
I prefer not to use heliocoils! there is another piece called big serts

http://www.timesert.com/html/bigsert.html

I hope there is enough metal left on the welded cylindrical nut inside the frame to use these!!
Any ideas will be appreciated.
I can't put in the new urethane motor mount inserts until I fix this problem

I just noticed mine has come apart....not sure how long we've been driving like that. If I understand it, that means 1/4 of the mounts are free. I got a quote at a body shop and the guy said no way would he spend that money (it's embarassing how much) he would just keep driving if he were me....
