We have camera speed traps in this country. We have areas of high population density as well, and high performance cars are not an exercise in futility in this country. Niether is it in Japan. They have devices called radar detectors just like in this country.

The Renault guy has done exactly opposite of what you say. He actually brought BACK the Japanese sports car to the US market. The G35 and the 350Z and the up coming GTR are proof of this. They never went away in Japan. The 300ZXTT lasted from 1990-2002 in that country. Six years longer than in this country. He did not clean out performance in Japan. Ghosn is taking cars that already exist and making them better in that country. You need to read a case study.

He did do good. But he laid off people, cut programs and platforms that no Japanese managers dared to do without being fired. The feel good, low volume programs are now gone. So Sony followed and hired a Gaigin as CEO also.

You don't consider a 350Z or even a GTR a feel good low volume program?

WTF does 3 cylinders have to do with anything? The 2.0 is a V6.

He meant the valve shut off feature like the Chrysler V8s. Supposedly it works pretty well on the highway.

Still the same engine. I test drove the G35 Coupe and the 350Z in late '94 back to back. They were very similar. The G35 more smooth and the 350Z more poise in the turn. The old ZTT used the VE which is a more costly engine. I rented a G35 4Dr a few months back. Lot of power but not as smooth as the I30. Somebody at the office has a M45. Given the gas price, I would go for the G35 or M35. Really the 4th gen I30 is just a great everyday car. Enough power, reasonably reliable, very smooth and comfortable car.

I can't remember, the GTR is based on the Skyline platform but wit that 4.5L?

Nissan was in the red all through the '90s this is no secret. Ignoring this by sticking to outdated traditions was only pulling it furthur under.

Carlos Ghosn is not some "Renault guy". He has turned around entire corporations including the one with the burger. He made a three year plan to pull Nissan out of the red and completed it ahead of schedule.

I hear your side of the argument but I feel you are missing key points.

No, I also agreed that he did the right thing. The view is from native Japanese executives who couldn't do the same without being fired. This is the unfair part. Laying off people is the hardest thing to do in Japan and it took a Gaigin to do it.

If you are talking about a Z32 TT that would be a VG30DETT.

BTW, that equity position is 44% of Nissan for $5.6B bail out, not a bad investment. Definitely large enough to be a majority vote on the Nissan board. Turning Nissan around also won Carlo the Renault CEO spot recently. Now he has to fly between Tokyo and Paris regularly. Carlos was born in Brazil but parents are from Lebanon. So he can speak at least 4 languages.

I remember seeing Renault's original intent was getting Nissan's engines. They got a lot more.

At 44% they still do not have majority control... that would be 51%. So far Renaut has not shared anything with Nissan.

I am aware of this particular feature you dumb ****... The question was what the fucc does it have to do with this thread?

BTW that running off half cylinders **** has been around since the 70s.. GM had it on several V8s. Maybe you need to .

Why don't you go buy a 3 cylinder Geo so you can save your "loot"?

Sigh, where have you been? There are enough non-voting shares that even a 25% with be the largest voting block in many cases. Nissan now owns 15% of Renault. This alliance of 5 car companies now include Samsung cars in Korea.

We have a guy at the office that had this car. He sold it because the gas mileage sucks when the gas price went crazy. When he got it a few years ago, the previous owner just replace the turbo in it. You can see both this car and the new Z pretty readily in Japan. More popular than the Supra.

Another guy at the office has 2 RX7s. They say that people would blow the engine right before the warranty expires, just to get a new engine. May be that's why Mazda got really conservative with the RX8.

I have a VW GTI 1.8T. This car is a lot of fun but you have to keep the RPM above 3K or else its a dog.

a lot seeing how 2.0 liter is significantly smaller than a 3.0, being very close to have the size.and 3cylinders out of a 3.0 liter v6 would put me at 1.5 liters...so its all relative to the intial post aout a 2.0 liter..

The weight of the car is the most important factor in saving gas. That's why people who had the 4th gen 2.0L VQ reported so-so gas savings. The cylinder shutoff feature only helps when the car is cruising at highway speeds. That 3 cylinder GEO can get up to 50MPH because it is real light.

Japan has the yellow plate liter cars (today about 1.2L) that are exempted from the collision safety rules. These cars can save gas. But you do see MB S class trapped behind these yellow plate pickup trucks in the fast lane on the freeway. They have crazy drivers like we do.

I have a Toyota Prius also. It gets good gas mileage because the gas engine is only setup to do cruise mode. It lacks the high gas usage modes in a regular gas car. When you press the pedal to the floor, it adds the electric motor power instead of injecting more fuel into the engine.

The Europeans are using diesels more. These new diesels have a reactor on the exhaust to burn all the soot out of the exhaust. We may see these engines here in the near future.

That old Cadillac/Eaton 2-4-6-8 engine with the cylinder shutoff was scrapped because it had a huge problem at intro.

Largest voting block does not equal majority control.

"3cylinders out of 3.0 v6 would put me at 1.5 liters..." Its obvious you have no idea what you are talking about and it is still not relevant.

Actually I don't know what is happening at Nissan. What I said is just generalities. From the fact that Nissan ceded the CEO spot to Renault in 1999 indicated that they were pretty desperate. 44% for $5.6B was a great deal for Renault. Board actions are pretty complicated and doesn't always part by affiliations. Frequently, proxies are not returned at voting time. So 44% is a very large block by any measure for a public company. In a 2 parties joint venture, definitely 51% or more has control. But Nissan is a public company. So 44% is a huge block.

Japanese companies have larger corporate stock ownership compared to American companies. So they may form coalitions more readily. But due to Ghosn's reputation, I can imagine he has the run of the Nissan board.
