dipping mirror

What with all the luxury items, I'm surprised that a dipping rearview mirror wasn't fitted. I really miss that (my Ford minivan had one). What's the best car to get a dipping mirror from? I suppose the power supply can be routed from under the headlining, from the sunroof, without too much trouble?

That's the only "dipping" thing I can think of as well...

im pretty sure he meant the process when you shift into reverse and the right sideview mirror 'dips' all the way down so you can see the curb better, though ive never called it that. i believe acura mdxs do this.

I'm surprised you guys don't know what I mean by a dipping mirror. This is the rearview mirror inside the car, not the side mirrors. The automatic type, which is what I want, has a photocell in it that detects the headlights of cars behind you, and automatically dips the mirror (you can actually see it move up and down) to stop the beams reflecting into your eyes and blinding you.

I know about it. BMWs have this feature. I guess you could take a mechanism from a Beemer. I dunno....

what's the advantage of a "dipping" mirror over a "dimming" mirror? i don't think i'd like a mirror that moved away from where i expected it to be or showed a different angle than i expected it to.

see my sig for an exhaustive writeup of an i30 dimming mirror install.

I have no clue what a 'dipping' mirror is but I installed a Donnely auto-dimming mirror. I talk about it here:
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=452919

FunLovin, VERY nice write-up!!

Get an I30 autodim mirror $50 bucks on fleabay average or go to a junkyard and get one. Dipping mirror just sounds strange, never had a car where the mirror actually moved up and down for glare. Most adjust to glare by darkening, or adjusting the mirror angle, I guess your talking about the ones that adjust the mirror angle. Just get an I30 mirror, easy swap and works great on the highway at night.

Much agreed. I bought my autodim mirror for every feature but the autodim. I actually find it annoying and turn it off most of the time. But I love the compass, temperature display and map lights.

An auto dimming mirror doesn't move, it electronically changes it's reflection properties. I've never heard of a mirror that physically moves itself into the anti-glare position. Don't think there is any such mirror ever made.

Auto dimming mirrors such as the I30's don't move, they electronically change.
My BMW's mirror doesn't move either, it electronically changes it's reflection properties as well.

Strange that you say "you can actually see it move up and down".
It aint happening, you must be smoking some pretty good stuff.

- Well, there's one on my Aerostar XLT, guys! At first I was fascinated by it until I nearly crashed into someone through watching the damn thing flipping up and down - exactly like what you do when you press the little plastic tab on the bottom of an ordinary mirror.
But thanks for your suggestion to use an I30 autodim mirror, that sounds like just the job I'm looking for. I'll have to try EBay since I don't think there are any I30's in the scrapyards here... they're mainly full of Ford/GM/Chrysler junkboxes.

Post some pics of that aerostar mirror, I am sure people want to see this. Use a ruler in the pic(s) so we can see that it actually moves up/down. I am sure I am not the only one who has never saw or heard of these. If it moves there must be a motor inside it, correct.

Mine doesn't get waaaay too dark. Try cleaning the front and back sensors. Maybe the front one is dirty causing it to think there's a huge difference between the light coming in front and light coming in back and thusly going into uber-dimming mode.

Oh yea, when you put the car in reverse the mirrors point down so you can see the parking lines. That's what that is...

I don't think that proves anything. I think in those articles, when they use the term "dipping mirror", they are referring to the sideview mirror(s), not the rear view mirror.

The one from Motormania is just a stick-on. How could it possibly automatically "dip"?
