new york state inspection
new york state inspection
Went in for inspection today. Failed because check engine light is on. This light first came on about 2 years ago (speedo head replace). The code's been cleared and the car passed inspection last 2 years. I told this to the guy at nissan and asked why he couldn't just clear the code and re inspect. He said he could not "because it would show that the code had been cleared and the problem wasn't fixed. " I said "are youtrying to tell me that I have to spend $400 to replace the speedo head in order to pass inspection ?"and he said Yes it has to be fixed" they changed the law this year in NY." I think he's jerking me off. Does anyone work at a N>Y>S> Inspection shop that can tell me if this is true?
Please only answer if you're sure because if this guy lied to me I'm going back with plenty to say to him and I want to be sure.

Well in order to pass inspection your car must be free of problems such as mechanical problems and anything causing a CEL so basically it has to be fixed in order to pass inspection

How many miles do you have? Just find a fleabay cluster 95-97 alot cheaper than $400. Does your speedo work at all? If not it doen't record the mileage when you drive. Take your cluster out and tighten the screws on the back, even if it's only temporary it will give you enough time to inspect it hopefully.
ok, this does not make sense. I had accidentally forgot to connect my MAF sensor and that set the CEL. I took it to the Autozone and had them clear the code for free, since MAF was connected back and everything seem to work fine. I took the car for inspection and passed it without a problem.
The issue is not withee clearing the code, its with fixing the problem. If the problem persists then the code will keep getting set

how long after u reset the ecu did u get it inspected....and do they hook ur car upto a computer.....in NYS for inspections they hook up a computer to check for recent codes....and if the ECU hasnt completed a cycle to erase it fomr the memory it fails
as maximase96 said if you clear the code you have to drive atleast 100 miles for it to cycle through. I had the same problem if you clear all codes and then try to hook it up to pass it will detect it and you need to wait for it to cycle through. Just find a used cluster and replace it with that, you can always get the mileage changed later.
the speedo is working fine, so is the odometer.
I thought the main purposes of inspection were safety and emissions. I can see failing because brakes low tread low signals etc..
I was just considering replacing my exhaust and if I have to blow 400 on this I can forget it.
Of course I must pass inspection.
