AFAIK it's only there because the seat doesn't fold down, and only has that small pass through in the armrest. Most likely just to make the rear part of the seat look nice from the trunk.
EDIT: As thin as it is it's hardly a structurally important part of the car, so no, you won't breach the integrity of anything by removing it. Purely aesthetic.

Lets first ask the question :
"How would taking it out help the stereo setup?"
That panel may not look like much, but neither does the sheet metal behind it. And all those ridges machined into it give it strength.

well, as to how it would help the stereo i was planning a front firing sealed off setup and needed to remove that piece in order for this to happen...
As if looks currently tho is that the torsion bars must be removed and i don't think i wnat to do that because, it makes the hinge of the trunk lid way too loose without them...
