Starting issue

Ok, my car has 169k and i have replaced, fuel filter, plugs (bosch plat.), and cleaned the throttle body and butterfly but on cold mornings (45orbelow) the car will turn over then hesitate like it's going to start then stall. Sometimes it takes 3 times to get it to start. Usually if i press the gas a little it helps but it still turns over really fast then stalls. If the temp is warmer, she fires right up within a second. It usually only does this after sitting all night.

This is starting to bug me. Any ideas? maybe clean the iac? I have completly tuned it up and it runs and idles great!

I do have the 0302 EGR code and ks code.

Thanks for the help

I'm not being a smart azz but, I think you pretty much answered your own question. I would fix that code, and the KS.

Well i know the knock sensor has nothing to do with the car starting. I might could see with the egr, but really all that does is reroute exhaust gasess back into the engine for reduced emissions. Neither has anything to do with the car not starting cold. Plus, ive had the ks code since I bought it 3yrs ago and it always started fine till a few months ago.

my car does the same thing, except mine doesnt stall, the RPMs just drop a hell of a lot then rev back up. mine was doing this everytime i started the car, which i fixed by replacing the coils...but it still does it the first time every day. also, if it idles roughly also check the PCV valve, when you take it out you should hear stuff shaking inside, if not you need a new one.

hope this helped. and if you find a cure for the morning starting problem please let me know!

what does the 0302 egr code indicate?
my car also does the same thing, it wants to die, unless i'm pressing on the throttle.
another forum mentioned two different things - 1) a cold start relay??, and 2) a coolant temperature sensor.

I haven't found any other mention for a cold start relay, and I'm not sure how a coolant temp sensor would contribut to this.

0302 egr says "low or excessive air flow" probaly the egr valve is stuck or clogged with junk. Not sure about relay, the coolant temp sensor should throw a code however.

My Max does the same thing. Sometimes I have to press the gas to keep the car from stalling. The car just got a tune-up a few thousand miles ago. There are no codes either. I wonder if it has anything to do with the ignition.

You could also try cleaning your grounds. Or maybe even upgrading your grounds, adding a few or something. That is if getting the egr code cleared doesn't fix the problem. I find that when the cause of the CEL is fixed the car runs amazing

Does your starter pause while it is cranking?

Poor starting - Idle Air Valve

Hi, you haven't mentioned the Idle Air Valve in particular, so this might not be your issue, but under another thread I described the problems I'm having with cold starts. It shows up around freezing, and it's all about the IAV. Maybe read my description under the "Starting Problems" thread that Bill73083 posted and see if it's what you've got.

I definitely got an IAV code from the ECU in my case.
