Cutting coils?

On saturday, we put a set of megan racing springs in the back(2 finger gap on 15" dubcaps), didnt have time to do the fronts yet. When these were on my friend's car, the front was higher than the back, and i dont really want that, so im thinking i could cut a coil off of the front springs to make the drop even since the springs are out of the car anyways. I know this messes with the spring rate and the whole geometry of the springs, but i really doubt this car is going to see any autox or roadcourse tracks while i have it. The drop is basically for looks and a slight handling increase. Would people recommend i cut a coil off, and if so, how would i do this?

its been done before although i personally wouldnt do it - my friend has been running cut sprints for about 2 years now and the car seems to handle fine. If your gonna do it I say go to town w/ a dremel tool and make sure you cut dead coils.

i've never attempted to cut coils myself, but I heard it's generally not a good idea. There are alot of controversial things that you should/shouldn't do to certain car parts. (cutting coils, using wheel spacers, etc)

whats wrong with wheels spacers...if u get good ones nothing.......but cutting coils is fine in terms of saftey but ride quality will goto hell because ur messing with spring geometry...if u want lower ride get difffernt springs

Some may argue the fact that wheel spaces (depending on size) can create extra stress on things, as for cutting springs...eh...u should just get cheap sleave coilovers, or get springs that match up better....I dont recomend cutting coils...

spacers are bad because they leave little thread to bolt the wheel back up. the better way to use any type of spacin is to get brackets that bolt to youre factory studs, and have a set of studs staggered between the factory lugs.

As far as cuttin the coils I wouldnt reccomend it either. I dont know how stiff the MR springs are but cuttin the spring will make it harsher for starters. And if your almost tuckin 15's get that front end checked often cause you may cause problems being that low.

Get an alignment too!

If you do decide to cut the springs avoid as much heat as possible.

So far im basically only hearing that it's going to be a harder ride than uncut, but i dont really care about a hard ride cause people say slammed Ground Controls are hard, but my friend just got them and it doesnt feel hard at all on our roads. Looking for some more input on cutting a coil from the front springs.

Not a good idea. It changes your suspension travel and all. Just read this it will tell you why not to cut your springs

Most ground controls feel hard because their spring rate is VERY high compared to most normal lowering springs. Mine are about 370-400 lbs in the front, this is due to the fact that most people with these kinda coilovers are going to go extremely low, therefore they need the stiff springs to not "bottom out"

When you cut springs, you mess with the geometry of the springs design and ontop of that, the rough ride most are talking about is due to this AND the fact that your cutting down on the springs "natural" suspension travel, this roughness i believe is mostly due to the fact that you will bottom out alot easier than without cutting the springs.

I believe the way to go as far as price is concerned, is sleave coilovers like i said before. Megan racing i believe makes a very cheap sleave type coilover setup that will probably outperform your cut springs, AND its adjustable.

just my .02

DONT CUT THE SPRINGS!! sucha bad idea. your gonna ruin the spring if you cut it, your handeling will be horrible, and the ride quality will just suck. if you want more of a drop, buy a different setup that lowers your car more!! if you cut any of the spring off you might be happy with how it looks, but the ride is gonna suck ballz.

good luck

Cutting springs is bad, fork over the extra 1-$200 it will cost you to get the springs you want and be happy, dont ghetto/ half *** it, you'll only be unhappy in the end. AND in the grand scheme of things $100 is so little when modding your car so for that price why not?

not only will your ride be "harder" but your car will buck like a bronco everytime you shift, give it gas, or slow down fast. you ever seen a car drive with a blown suspension? its kinda funny.

that would change the spring rate and the ride will become uncomfortable

how long are they? you *could* cut some off if they are really long (like stock) and they will stay seated in the strut. i know intrax are just as long as stock but eibach and tokico are shorter. so if you really want to do it just make sure you dont cut off to much. not that i recommend it, but not like it hasnt been done.

Yes, just like the sprints. You can get away i guess with cuting off a few dead coils (in the rear). But i dont think the megan springs are like that, i THINK they are shorter like the eibach's... ive seen pics of them before on ebay, i may be wrong tho....
