I usually get 450 on a tank with 13 miles or so of travel on the yellow light. This week I changed the airfilter..which looked like it's a billion years old. I mean this thing had hard cardboard that for the life of me I don't know how it could pass air through. It's made of metal on the sides, is that the way a factory air filter looked??? Anyway I replaced it..tank increased from 450 to 480 easy. 90% highway driving..granny speeds..60-65. I have a 5 spd too btw.

I just put in 16.95 gallons in my 95 automatic maxima. I get about 18.2 mpg and thats maybe 20-30% highway driving.

i thought i was getting HORRIBLE gas mileage. i guess not reading some of the posts.

i still wanna ask if i can get better mileage once i tell you my conditions. My mechanic told me all 3 of my cats were probably rotten (145k mileage) and thats what was causing the loud humm while driving. So i got the cats emptied out and patched back up.
The car is SOO much quiter now...except for a little white noise type of sound coming which seems to be that some junk from one of the cats must have been lodged somewhere in the resonator. he wants me to get a resonator put in for $100 (used resonator for $40 and labbor $50...i m in MI..btw is that good?)

also my check engine light is on. i m assuming its the O2 sensors...what else could it possibly be. the light was on waaay before i did anything with the cats.

anyways...with this info...should i just get a new exhaust system to better my gas mileage, get only the resonator...is the resonator something i shouldn't delay, or what.

The problem is that my car just doesnt pickup fast enough...lets say i take off hard from a stop...it will respond great....rpm up to 4-4.5 i let off and let it shift, floor it again and i get this surge of rpm rising but the car takes a good few seconds to be as responsive. i hope that makes sense. like it gets real loud and i see the rpm rise but the speed is rising slowly....i have to let off a second time and floor again.

i dont drive hard AT ALL but i just want to make sure it works fine in all conditions and it should NOT be doing this. what could be wrong. it was like this before doing anything with the cats..ofcourse that wouldnt do anything with this.

main question being...if i get a new exhaust system...will it fix everything?

with my 1996 Maxima GXE, I used to get 22 MPG in city, but lately I just got about 16 MPG when the gas price is soaring.... maybe time for oil change?
