Driver power window fell

So I was driving today and lowered my driver's side power window and right as it went to the bottom I heard a pop and something fall down. I took the panel off and started looking around and found a metal disk.

It ended up being the cover on the front of the motor that sealed in the big rubber "gear". I pushed it all back in and got the cover back on but the window won't roll up.

The window is attached to the track fine, and if I manually pull it up and down the wire guide moves in sync with it. If its up and I press down, the window goes all the way down but the auto-down keeps on going until I hit the switch again. It will not go up on its own unless im helping it along.

I am assuming I need a new motor but after searching there is a lot of different terminology being thrown around. Do I need a new motor, regulator, or something else?

Edit: Just checked amazon for the pieces and the regulator is the whole damn assembly minus the electric motor. $28 shipped is not bad all all. Ill get it changed out and maybe get some pics for a quick write up.

If the MOTOR works up and down, you don't need a motor. Sounds to me like you need a REGULATOR assembly. Sometimes they come with the motor, sometimes not. When I replaced the windowregulator in my grand am it was one piece, motor and regulator.

I just replaced 1 front and 1 rear motor/regulator assembly this weekend in my 96. I paid $38.45 shipped for each side. Motor and regulator together. It's not worth trying to install one or the other. Simple enought to just do the entire assembly I'd say. Cheap too! Car Parts Wholesale on Ebay.

Took me less than 20 minutes to replace both sides! Super simple, no rivots, all philips/hex head screws.

I should have taken pics and done I write up I guess.

^ This. Replacing it isn't too hard, just make sure to roll your window down to make install easier otherwise you will have fun, as I did, squeezing in the ratchet between the door frame and the bolt holding the window to the regulator

Lucky bastard.

On my GrandAm it was ALL rivets. Had to end up drilling the damn things out and installing nuts/bolts/lock washers on it. NOT fun at all.

Well I already jumped the gun. There was a $40 price difference on the regulator and combo so I just got the regulator. I have all the tools in the world available to me and I order EVERYTHING from amazon because of free 2 day shipping.

I read that the regulator was some how molded to the gear on the motor, that's why I just opted to by the entire assemblies.

In that case, go to a junkyard and pull one off a 4th Gen they've got there. No guarantees of it working but it'll be a helluva lot cheaper.

28 is not bad at all, I've had to replace all my window regs aready. Payed 50 for them each. And my motors never went out. It was the rubber around the motor that turned.

Yeah, the disk that the motor goes into with that rubber in there, the cover popped and some of the rubber came out. That was the noise I heard, got it all back in but it still slips so for $28, Ill replace it. Part should be in today.

Well part came in yesterday, went to install it today and decided to look at it before I pulled all of the old one out. What they sent me was everything but that piece that broke out. Apparently I need the motor, not the regulator.

Edit: Set up the return and ordered the window motor for $33 shipped. Seems like that will be what I needed. Anything on the regulator part of the window seems to be fixable if there is a problem.

Yep, and I'm sorry I forgot to mention to buy just the motor (was starting a test). It's really easy to swap however.

No problem. Beauty of Amazon Prime. Pop it back in the box, print a label, and return for free.

Finally got around to getting my motor and got it installed. Under 45 minutes from start to finish. Door panel, braces, plastic, glass, then regulator and motor out. What had happened was the rubber "gear" inside of the old motor sheered in the center. The motor is held on by 3 easy screws so if you have to replace either part, just get which piece you need, not the entire assembly, much cheaper.

Good as new, I'm not sure if you have said it or not, but I'm assuming this is the first window motor that has broken. Be aware that they might all go out around the same time...

AFAIK, it is the first. But it was the driver side which is would expect to get a lot more usage. We will see.

Did you read? He already fixed his problem. And you got screwed if you paid $150 for a regulator. But good job post whoring to get your 15 posts (and even admitting it in another thread)
