which octane of gas do i use?

hey guys i have a 99 infiniti i30 and when i pump gas i noticed that on my gas cap door it says for maximum performance use premium gas, but my question is it necessary? the car is stock and the city gas mileage on this car sucks compared to my previous sentra se-r......will it affect anything if i just run 89 octane?

I only use 93 bc I cannot find 91 (which is recommended). Despite what anyone tells you yes you can use 87 or 89 but the car will not run at its full potential due to the fact that your knock sensor will probably go bad soon. Check out the stickies - theres a good explanation for this.

You'll get better gas mileage and performance running the 93 or 91

Its kills a liberal like me to have to put a conservative price of $40 worth of 93 octane priced gas in my ride but it happens and after I get over the fact I drive the hell out of it and love it. 93 FTW!

Premium is recommended but not mandatory.

i think 91 is cool, i wouldnt mess around with 89 but i forget the guys name, 6th gen owner, knows gas ! you can go down octane points if you live in a higher elevation, cant remember why. but if thats not the case i think middle grade is fine, and premium again like it says for maximum performance. but then you get into the whole arguement that the high grade gas will get you better mileage but im not sure just how much.

small article on fuel:
NZ 97.5 is like usa 93
NZ 91 is like usa 89 ( i think )

check out their findings

true it WONT run well at all but runnin on 89 will NOT ruin ur knock sensor... these sensor go bad because of heat and stress and time of course.. notice almost 9 times out of 10 a bad KS is cracked..

so the moral of the story is run on 91+ for good gas milage and best performance

I always buy 93 octane, but since I pee in the tank at least once a day, the rating is probably around 97.

I30's take 93 or better and Maximas take 91 or better, but again this is for Maximum performance.

Reason being is that the I30 has titanium valves.

I have read that the higher grade gas is good for city/stop go driving while lower grade is good for highway because it burns slower. Some guy on the org wrote this when gas was spiking.

Thats incorrect....octane is "the resistance to burn". Higher compression engines, such as the VQ, require a higher octane fuel to prevent pre-ignition, or "pinging, knocking". Gasoline doesnt burn slower than others......whoever told you that shouldnt post info unless its true. As long as 87 isnt used in the VQ, 89 will be fine...the knock sensor will take care of things. Sometimes 91 or 93 octane is not in as good of condition in the gas station tanks, because its not sold as often because of the high prices. Gasoline usually only has a shelf life of 30 days before it starts to change chemically and not give its full energy potential. Definitely something to think about.

My knock sensor was ruined by 89 which the previous owner used and was not cracked.

From what I was told the higher the octane rating the slower the gasoline burns. Zander just had it backwards.

Higher octane gas tends to yield better fuel mileage than lower octane gas. So I tend to think the above statement is possibly true.

And gas definetly doesn't ruin the KS. From 95 all the way to until about '02 my dad always put 87 octane in. When I received the car in about '03 the KS finally let go and by that time the car was running 93. KS went dead due to being on the car for almost 10 years and over 100K miles.

It was Silvermax04 that did the research you're talking about, I think the thread can be found in the Fluids and Lubricants section.

I always buy Shell 93 with that "special crap" in it and I go an entire week on half a tank. This includes 5 miles each way to work on highway and constant city driving all week. I guess it's about time to check the milage I am getting....

It's V-POWER, yeah 1/2 tank a week is kind of a lot of gas used.

30 Mpg

I run 91 to 93 octane in my 99 GXE and get from 28 to 30 MPG. I have 175,000 miles on the clock. There is one little hick-up the check engine light is on. It is an EGR trouble code, I have replaced the EGR Valve and have determined that was not the problem it is the temp sensor. But since this light came on the MPG went from 24 to 30 over night, with a heck of a lot more power and still passes state emmissions(when I reset the light). This has been going on for close to 2 years.

I have owned my Maxima since new (96) and she has been on a steady diet of Unocal 76 Premium fuel. I made this decision because of the sticker in the gas cap. I just figured since the factory put it there, it must be there for a reason.

I have the engine error code 0304 KS. Should I just ignore and start burning 93 octane? Up until now I have used 87.

I used to only run 93 octane (highest grade around MD and eastern TN I've seen), then for some reason I switched to 89, mid grade (probably because I'm cheap), and no difference at all. I won't put in 87 for whatever reasons, but mid and premium really held no difference for me.

I had no problem putting 87 in my Olds or my Camry, though

EDIT: I get 27-30 MPG highway with '89, so it's good enough for me.

The grade of gas does not affect the KS at all!!!! Change your KS, I'm sure it is just old and needs replacing.

Use 93 premium unless I'm having a fuel related problem (then I put in 87 since its cheaper)

Huge difference if your an auto b/c there's this annoying lag when accelerating if your not using premium
