Found an extra pound of weight reduction

Well i found an extra pound of weight reduction tonight. It is a metal plate inside the glove box. If you don't want to remove the entire glove box then this is for you.I'm sure this is there for added accident protection.

Weight reduciton isnt about how much one peice will shave off. Its about the combined weight of several peices. :

At the weight of the max, it only takes about 75 pounds to shave 1 tenth off your time. The lighter the car, the bigger difference it makes. Shaving 50 lbs off a 2000 lbs car is like shaving 100 lbs off a 4000 lbs car. At 3000 it's about 75 pounds.

Just wondering~... But how big are you guys?
Has anyone thought about putting themselves on a weight reduction...?

Im 165lbs, When i have my cousin who is 245lbs in the car with me... its alot slower but i can't see 1lb here, 3lbs there adding up to a significant 150lb loss.

Just adding coilovers is 30-40 lbs off right there then add aftermarket wheels etc it will add up

Is the glovebox still functional?

I never thought about this. But they weight may be there so they glove box drops down when it's unlatched. So it may not stay open by it's self. You may have to undo the string that helps it close.

again, you have to understand that it does add up. it may not seem like much for each piece, but like you said, even with your big friend, you could tell a difference. so when it all adds up, it is noticeable.

I did this today, and my thought is that every little bit helps. It doesn't restrict the functionality of it, and it saves a little over a pound. It is a win-win situation

Coilovers saved me 6 lbs ea in the front the rear is less because the springs are much smaller but I haven't weighed them yet. My estimate is less than 20 lbs total.

good find fanatic. has anyone put their glovebox back to see if it will drop down normally when unlatched?

and do coilovers save significant amounts of weight over an aftermarket suspension setup? i feel like my tein s-techs and tokico illuminas should be lighter than the oem suspension when i swapped it out.

When I installed my D2s I weighed the front strut OEM to the D2 coilover and got a 14 lb difference each so times that by 2 that 28 lb loss but I didnt weigh the rears

Your passenger wont be too happy about their knee going through the glove box. But then again if you want to save wait you shouldn’t have passengers anyway.

That was the last race last year. This years season will start shortly. I will be at least 400 pounds lighter and be on drag slicks.

So what was the answer about the glove box still operating properly? Does it still fall open slowly on its own when the handle is unlatched? Does it stay open on its own? Thanks. Good find.

post #11 says he did it with no problems. I won't bother doing it since i don't use a glove box for my drag car.

There is no contradiction in adding weight to your car (or yourself) but also wanting to do all the weight reduction you can. For instance, I knew by adding my double din Kenwood 8017 DVD/Nav. along with a separate navagation unit and a separate CD changer would add weight to the car - but I really wanted Nav. and a changer. Period. So does that mean that I should not remove the 4 tow hooks from my car to shave 4lb? I shouldn't remove the metal plate under my steering column to shave 1+ lb? Just because you might be adding weight from a certain mod that's important to you (like say a ground effects kit) doesn't mean you shouldn't reduce all the weight you can in other areas.

it doesnt matter.... if you subtracting weight form the car and you gain muscle (weight)..... you arent helping to loose weight from the car ur keeping it the same....

so yea take 20lbs from the car and gain 20 lbs of muscle....lol

Yes it does matter. In your example: take 20 lb from the car, add 20 lb to the driver. Net gain zero, right? But what's the alternative? Do no car weight reduction but still add 20 lb to the driver? That would be a 20 lb gain.

Like I said, even if you are going to add weight to your car, it is still beneficial to reduce it whereever you can.

I don't see how you don't see that.

Hahahahaha, okay.... let's think this through... yes, gaining 20lbs and shaving it off the car will net you nothing performance wise. But the other alternatives are: a) gain no weight and shave no weight or b)gain weight and shave no weight. One of these gives you the best of both worlds.. although 20lbs won't exactly make or break a race, that doesn't mean that what you're doing is stupid.

What happens if you already weigh 130 lbs? And have done exactly 550lbs of weight reduction to your car?

Oh yeah, I ran the 14.3 with 410 pounds of weight reduction done. I have lots of other stuff up my sleeve in order to easily get 13s within the next couple weeks.

Does anyone have a link to that thread an .org member put together a few years ago with a list of weight reduction? He had a Stage I, II, III. I forget his name and I forgot to save the link. Thanks.
