Yes it does .... not significantly but it does hurt the low end.

thats wat im feelin low end is weak all the sudden. my flex pipe sounds like a catback exhaust rite now... but i dont understand .. i mean the basic idea is that the earlier gasez escape the better performance, rite?

Get a cheap budget y-pipe to fix that

Not necessarily, no. Any pipe displays resonances at different frequencies. These either help or hinder the escape of the exhaust gases depending on the rpm.

That is mainly for top end, it hurts low end because there is not enough backpressure b/c of the leak.

Backpressure =! good... EVER. Its in the stickies, what you want is high velocity flow of gas for good low end, not back pressure.

I had a similar hole in mine, car felt sluggish (but sounded great). Anyway, I put in a Budget y-pipe and the difference is astounding. The rpms run up much quicker & the overall engine seems smoother and pulls stronger. I love driving this car again! btw my car has 450,000kms or 270k miles, trust me i know when it's running great.

How could backpressure possibly do an engine any good? Think about it guys! Sheesh!

Duh! It forces all the fuel to burn!

Well, for all we know he's some 45 year old master tech at a dealership somewhere, so post count doesn't necessarily equate to automotive intelligence.

my exhaust has been coroding for quite some time and right now it sounds like I have an aftermarket exhaust on there. I definetaly feel a loss of low end power, thats for sure. And its annoying as hell too!

u can always get a small roll of DEI exhaust wrap... IMO i would upgrade to SS y-pipe like CM or cattman. wsp non-ss y-pipe sux...

Well, this isn't the first time the stickies have been wrong.

Hmm...wonder why F1 cars run like crap with broken exhausts? I know they don't have much of an exhaust, just basically a header into a straight pipe. Would love to see a scientific explaination on this.

Found a great link!

Hey fellas, I've found this great link to the workings of the exhaust system. It actually explains a lot in quite easily understood terms. I'm not sure if it's a repost though.

WS does suck. My non stainless WS pipe is all rusted and the flex section is leaking. i wraped it with header wrap but it only lasted 2 months before it crumbled.
I bought another warpspeed y pipe.

Try sticking a potato up your exhaust if you think back pressure is such a good thing

Try removing the whole exhaust system and see if backpressure is such a bad thing. Moron, if you plug up the whole exhaust of course it's not good. Next time you try to make a point, run into a moving train.

Only problem with removing the whole exhaust is the gases damage everthing in the bay. I used to race motorcycles on methanol and open pipes were the best. No backpressure there. Just select the length so the resonance helps the power come in at the places you want it. A node is produced at the exhaust port every time the pipe hits the correct harmonic. Which is f/2 (half wave), f(full wave), 3f/2 etc . . . where frequency f is related to the RPM. (RPM/60 x number of cylinders). Node is a negative pressure point that actually acts like a partial vacuum to pull the exhaust gas from the cylinder. The silencer acts to detune the pipe effect and that's why you often hear complaints about poor performance when it rots out. But you must have been through school and been taught how organ pipes work in your physics course, right?
