what muffler? welding? advice plz

hi

I put a new y-pipe on my Maxi and when they lifted up my car, I found that muffler need to be changed in near future.
I have researched couple days for mufflers and I am not still sure about what is good muffler to my Maxi.
I want a quiet one in idle and I want a loud when rpm goes over 2500 rpm while I am accelaration. any recommendation?
also If I pick universal muffler, does it have to be welded?
Is there any muffler that I can do it myself?
when I checked my muffler, It was connected b-pipe with bolt and nuts.
any idea, appreciat it

thanks

A universal muffler will need to be welded. Yes there are cat-back kits and just rear section mufflers for our cars and u can do it urself. There is a thread on the top of the 4th gen page dedicated to exahusts I would listen to the clips to see wich you prefer.. Good luck.

THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE.

I HEARD THOSE SOUND CLIPS AND I WASN'T SURE WHICH ONE I REALLY LIKE B/C EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT Y-PIPES AND B-PIPES, ALSO SOMEONE HAS A RESONATOR.
IT WAS KINDA HARD TO TELL FOR ACTUAL MUFFLER SOUND ITSELF.

RIGHT NOW I GOT BUDGET Y-PIPE AND REST OF MY EXHAUST SYSTEM IS STOCK ONE.
THANKS ANYWAY, I WILL SEARCH IT LITTLE MORE
ANY GOOD MUFFLER BRAND?
REASONABLE PRICE?
IF I NEED RESONATOR, WHERE IN EXHAUST SYSTEM I PUT IT?

THANKS

You can put the Stillen muffler on by yourself, direct bolt-on. Kind of expensive though.

THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE.
I HAVE KINDA TIGHT BUDGET ($125-$150 MAX <INSTALLATION INCLUDED>)NOW.
SO I HAVE TO FIND SOMETHING GOOD AND REASONABLE PRICE.
I DON'T NEED FANCY ONE LIKE OVER $250. I JUST NEED SOMETHING HAS BETTER SOUND THAN STOCK AND SOMETHING THAT I CAN DO IT MYSEFT WILL BE PERFECT.
WHICH WAY IS BETTER TO PUT IT ON ? (1. DIY, 2. WELDING FROM SHOP) I THINK WELDING IS EASIER AND CHEAPER, RIGHT? BECAUSE YOU NOT DOING IT AND YOU JUST PAY IT.

I NEED SOME ADVICE

THANKS

Grab yourself a 5th gen muffler, have it welded in, and call it a day. I don't know why you're talking about a resonator when all you're doing is replacing the muffler

THANKS FOR THE INPUT

THE REASON WHY I MENTIONED ABOUT THE RESONATOR IS SOMEONE SAID THE IF YOU HAVE A MAGNAFLOW MUFFLER, YOU SHOULD HAVE A RESONATOR FOR BETTER SOUND (NOT TOO LOUD)

WITH THE 5TH GENERATION MUFFLER, I STILL NEED TO WELD IT, DON'T I?

THANKS

Typing in CAPS is the equivilent of shouting. Please do not shout at me. If you are getting a fairly loud muffler that may be too loud, a bigger resonator will quiet it down.

It's so loud in here.

I think most people are referring to aftermarket b-pipes when they say to get a new resonator. The stock one should do just fine.

I bought a stainless steel Borla muffler off Ebay for only $69...sounds great! My entire exhaust system is stock apart from this muffler. I find there is a drone from 2000-3000 rpms but otherwise its pretty quiet. It has a deeper grumble when its idling than the stock muffler and overall sounds pretty sport/aggressive. I'm very happy with it...always try to drive so I can hear it at its loudest! It has a 2.5" inlet/outlet so some welding had to be done to make it fit. Nothing major...I just had a local muffler shop do it for me.

I do have soundclips too...I can probably dig them up if you want to hear. Just PM me.

i bought a cheap straight through coffee can muffler off ebay and had a shop weld it on. it sounds sweet, but i cant stand the coffee can muffler look, so im gonna get a race series magnaflow oval muffler w/ 4 inch slant tip soon. the ebay muffler was like 25 bucks shipped.

I also had the ebay muffler on one of my maxima's, sound was good but the look was terrible. I next did flowmaster and then sold the car and now i just got the flowmaster muffler again. I love the sound. I would recomend a flowmaster 60 series. It's deep and not loud at all.

i have heard good things about a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. it would have to be welded on. you could go with a 2.5" or 2.25" inlet depending on future upgrade plans and whatnot. like you said, you're on a budget, and you shouldn't have any trouble buying a muffler and getting it installed for that price. good luck shopping!

I had bought the muffler at the shop. They had to run a little bit of pipe and the install and everything cost 130. I had a tip of my own so they also welded it on there. I dont have pics yet but i can get some later.

id say go with the flowmaster or magnaflow. magnaflow universal mufflers already have nice looking tips, flowmasters you have to buy your own tip.

Guys i need help, i got a 98 max with a CE y pipe, CE high flow cat and a straight through cat back exhaust that has 2.5 inch piping along with huge no name coffee can muffler. Im tired of gettin tickets and headaches because of how loud it is.

Will the magnaflow or flowmaster decrease the sound level by a lot? if so which series or model should i go for????? Or if there is any other muffler out there than can get the job done while lookin good and sounding good?

Someone was also telling me that if i go with a different muffler, i may get problems related to pressure or something like that, any opinions on that????

Thanks for the website, cleared up a lot of things. I almost went out and got a magnaflow but now that i know its too loud without a resonator, there is no way im getting that muffler.

I think im going to go with a flowmaster 60 series muffler and just buy a nice tip for it, but im still gonna wait before i do it, so more opinions are welcome

thanks guys
