Problem: Longer Starter Cranking at Start Up
Problem: Longer Starter Cranking at Start Up
Sloppy has noticed that the old 1997 I30t's 158,000 mile 3.0 liter engine seems to require a longer cranking time for the starter to actually turn the engine over and run. How long? Like a solid 2 -3 seconds of cranking.
New spark plugs, oil ilter and oil change, and battery checks out fine. Bought the I30 with 100K and have no idea when the fuel filter was last changed.
QUESTION: Can a gummed up fuel filter be causing my starting difficulties? Where else should I look? Fuel injectors?
Thank you for helping the old Slopster out.

Start by changing the fuel filter and cleaning out the throttle body and IACV valve. If your long crank continues, check the ECU for any stored error codes.
Sensors that can effect crank and start are:
Both Crankshaft position sensors (they control ignition and monitor engine speed)
Camshaft position sensor (controls fuel delivery timing)
Engine Coolant Temp sensor
The Haynes shop manual
can guide you step by step in trouble shooting your cold start issue.
