REALLY REALLY mpg

My car is a 98 se auto with all the options. It gets horrible gas mileage. This past weekend I filled up on saturday, the needle is past the F mark. Now ive only driven about 38 miles and the needle is already just below 3/4 tank mark. What needs to be replaced? I have no lights like SES or anything.

Check codes. Do maintenance. Check for fuel leaks. Your gauge or sensor could be bad. We don't know what is wrong with your car. NO.

May I ask why you have a 98 SE auto but your name is 97SE5psd?

Mpg

Maybe you need to replace your fuel gauge or sending unit. Why not wait until you fill up, and then decide if you really are getting bad mpg. A gauge is simply a "gauge" of how you are doing. It is not perfect.

Check your ECU for a KS code. It a ghost code so it wont show up as a SES light

if you don't know what to do then take it to the dealership. They know what to do then.

You can start by doing some of the maintence stuff that is outlined in the stickies. We don't know how much of DIY guy you are and we don't know how to fix your bad mpg. But i'll tell you one day right off that bat. That is a bad way to look at it. Fill up your car to the max, then reset your odometer and drive around till you have like 1/4 tank left and then fill it up again. Take the number of miles divided by how many gallons you filled up with and there is your MPG. Anything in the higher teens digits mean that you dont have "REALLY REALLY mpg" a maxima comes from the factory with about 20mpg city .

Air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, inflate tires, drive slower, and maybe O2 Sensors.

I just filled up with 350 miles on the trip, it took 15.8gal which works out to 22mpg. Thats about 70% city / 30% hwy driving. (A/T)

That and around town in an auto sucks down the gas, not as bad as you have related to us, but like mid to low teens for strictly city driving.

A gauge is a gauge, for example for the first quarter of my tank I got 100 miles, the second quarter I got 50. Ended up getting about 22 mpg on that tank. You cant really judge based on quarters my friend.

First what is your calculated MPG not by the gauge. How many miles on the car? Highway driven or in town. How is the air filter? Are you blowing smoke out of the exhaust or does the exhaust smell like you have a rich fuel mixture? Pull a plug or two and check the condition.

Need more info.

You can't judge your gas mileage from looking at the gauge.
Calculate it correctly, as explained above and get back to us.

In town mileage on V6 cars sucks in general. Little trips in the winter make it worse. Ethanol blended gas also brings down your mileage alot. The oil companies say they add it for cleaner air in their commercials (oh such angels they are), though accidently forgetting to mention it also happens to boost their sales considrebly since people end up burning more gas. I love it when large corporations **** on my back and tell me its raining.

There are also about a thousand doodads and thingajigs (knock sensor, filters, etc etc)under the hood that might not be operating right and might not be setting off the CEL. What im trying to say is that because of a large number of complex reasons the maxima guzzles gas like crazy and thats when its turned off, and the sooner we all learn accept that the better off we will be.

If you are looking for fuel economy, consider a vehicle that is more conservative in its fuel burning and cheaper to fill up, such as a Hummer, coal mining equipment, the Queen Elizabeth II, the space shuttle, or a WWII aircraft carrier. If your monthly fuel bill is about the same as the US Military's, then your max is already operating at its peak efficiency and there is nothing more that could be done.

/maybe im alittle bitter

Yeah, fuel gauges from the 90s are not that great. You gotta calculate the mpg.

wonderful.
judging by the way oil prices are going, we'll be down to using meth-rottweiler-treadmill motors soon.
but really, my Gen 4 Max is quite frugal compared to the wife's Gen III Villager. And it does 17.7MPG around town, so I believe the Max should do substantially better than that. Unless of course you happen to live somewhere like Los Angeles.
