Do the airbags in the seats in the 98s and 99s only offer torso protection? I seen a crash test video of an 00 maxima with the seat airbags and its looked like a long tube that offered head protection also. Do the 4th gen side airbags offer this also?

its like a regular air bag, but for your side. basically so you dont hit the door during a collision.

No it doesn't!!! Not the 4th gen side airbag. I was t-boned in my 98 GLE and its pretty useless. Its just a tiny little bag that pretty much just cushions your chest from the door. My passenger didn't even know it went off its so useless.

When I was buying my current Max, I didn't really care about having the side airbag anymore because it doesn't provide much protection and it just makes your car WAY more expensive to repair if you're in a side collision. 5th gen Max's have much better side airbags IIRC. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer a car with this protection but only if my chest AND head are protected.
