AT Tranny SWAP QUESTION

I'm looking around junkyards for a comparable tranny to swap: searchin for the 95-99 max GXE/SE annnnnnnd...

I've found a 97 w/ 70k and a 96 with 84k...they're all priced around 500 bucks- not bad for allegedly rear/side crashed vehicles and a full tranny. I guess I will have to throw my body under these vehicles to remove the tranny myself and to get a better looksky...as I don't think they'll do it for me.

BUT ALSO, What does it mean when they ask me if I need a "LOCKING or NON-LOCKING" tranny?

Also, I'm gonna ask around to have a mechanic do the swap, how much is reasonable to charge?

They are asking if you have a limited slip differential (which is part of the trans on FWD cars). You don't, as it was only available in the Infinity version. Yours is non-locking. For $500, they should be pulling that for you.

Actually you should say either ... then spend a couple bucks on the axles and you got yourself LSD.

Spend the extra few bucks and get the I30t trans, VLSD, and drivers' side axle so it works. Atleast when you spend all that money to put it in you will have something better than before.

Thanks for the information guys!

I'm going to go with the non-locking tranny and demanding they pull the tranny out for me.

I'm DEF not swaping to manual as I've seen too many swaps go awry and I'm just looking to correct the problem and then sell the car in a few months.

About 5Spd swaps going "awry" ... I am being serious ... please point one out that they never got finished even after many problems. Because I am considering it and I want to see if anyone really got themselves in a deep hole. The ones I read are "HAHA I GOT MINE DONE AND ALL YOU GUYS ARE STILL STUCK WITH P-R-N-D-2-1" ... AHHHH WHY DID I BUY A 2nd automatic transmission.

Alright...check all the thread's i posted in. I recall a guy with a swap having issues and asking for advice-- he's slipping already. I figure its practical to ride the 11 yr old max for another 50k or 1/2 a year w/ an AT. Maybe it's because I don't have the testosterone problem tho

if u get a good deal on a tranny (600-700 bucks) you'd be lucky to be a little over 2 thou for parts and labor (labor will be expensive).

If you want to stay auto get the VLSD and one axle it is worth it. You can probably even get a local org member to help you install it for alot cheaper.
You won't regret doing that swap....

Limited Slip Differential

Basically it makes your two front tires spin at the same rate and minimize spinning for hard take offs.

I do not know how it comes into play while turning, because if the wheels lock for turning then it would make it worse since your outside tire needs to spin faster then the inside.

Search and good luck

It means I'm a Chick with a BIKE and we RULEEEEE!! WOOOOOOOOO-WOOOOO!! lol

"I don't need no STINKING *sticking* solenoid!"
The Max is still at the tranny specialist, I found an awesome mech...I'm gonna bring him donuts after he diags. He said no metal shards found so far (gears= okie) and now he's inspecting further tranny parts, he ruled out solenoid cuz that would throw a code like i said, so maybe it'll cost under 1g, which ain't freakin bad!

Shoot for the cash i'd throw into a rebuild i could run to urbanracer and buy a crap civic that works.

"if the wheels lock for turning" doesn't happen the diff locks so both tires spin not just one. Really helps in rain and snow for traction going uphill or a sharp curve. You have both tires working together, instead of against one another, with one tire always getting more traction w/o VLSD. VLSD is a night and day difference.....

I guess I didn't pray hard enough. My tranny is filled with lot's of metal. It's ugly. I decided against the swap since i have a decent price on a complete rebuild: it's still over a grand, but almost the same price as a swap and i get a 1 year warantee. While he was under there I got him to change my worn front engine mount.

For the money i'm shelling out...ya better believe I'm going to make sure the max sees another 100k!
