5spd swap reliability

i was curious to how reliable the 5 spd swap is after it is done. ive heard stories that the car doesnt run the same way it was, which indeed is tru because its a manual. but i just want to know the downsides to the 5 spd swap.

Your question is general in nature, so it should go into the general 4th generation forum.

The problem is i don't even know what you're asking. A local .orger completed a 5-speed swap recently and his car works just fine.

i've done the swap. a friend of mine also (nismo3112). we're both still running strong and if you do it right, there shouldn't be anything wrong with it.

It's true, my car never ran the same after the swap. It ran alot better.

the swap is as reliable as the parts and effort you put into it.

i was talking to my uncle about it, and he said that something had to be changed like in the intake manifold area, i cant remember.

is it possible for someone to name the MAIN PARTS that have to be swapped for the car to run properly.

definitely possible.

here's the parts you NEED.

clutch pedal

clutch master and slave cylinders and lines.

5spd tranny

flywheel

clutch

driver's side 5spd axle

shifter linkage and shifter

all bolts for above items

Those are the only things you NEED for the swap.

not to bump the thread... but FYI you don't need the drivers side axle unless you put in the VLSD, this seems to be a common debated topic. you can use the axles from the auto (however since you need to have them out anyway, might as well change them for about 60 bucks a piece)

auto and 5spd driver's side axles are different. You need the 5spd axle.

So do we or do we not need the manual axles? Answer is no. Correct? Saves me time pulling em off and putting em on between my car and the parts car.

First of all the 5spd is very realiable. Less parts to break compared to the auto. Oh another thing. Good luck with finding a 5spd they are very rare, unless you are willing to spend for a brand new one.

Edit: I got a quote from my nissan dealer for a 5spd trans brand new. $2000, $2500 + tax is that a good price?

If you get it rebuilt before installing it, yes. These trannys seem to need rebuilt every 100-150k.

i got my tranny from a donor car that had 140k, it was a 96, the milage on my car at the time of swap was 80k the milage on my car now is 153k the swap was 3 years back. no problems at all. now some of the 95-96 trannys do have problems with the bearings. but having to be rebuilt every 100-150k i dont find that to be correct.

Yup, 163k here and no probs. 3rd gear synchro is a little sometimes (relaxed 2-3 shift at redline grinds) but other than that it's just fine.
