hacked air box
hacked air box
My question is that if i just cut the bottom portion of the airbox (ie. triangular shape) without removing the resonator, would i still have the full affects of the hacked air box mod? This is what I'm planning to do.

i regret doing that mod. It made the car sound lound and crappy. At first i liked it, then it got annoying real fast. Just keep the stock box and drop in a high flow K&N or something. There is virtually no gain with hacking the box.
maybe virtually no gain but there are countless threads of people saying its the best but personally i did it for the sound, i cut out all the sides but left teh bottom because it seemed pointless because of the wheelwell. I left the resonator, havn't ever tried removing it...yet. I love the sound, reminds me of a mustang
First of all, what is it that you wanted to accomplish when deciding on this mod? Performance gains or just sound? If all you care about is sound, then this mod will do just that. If you are looking for performance gains, this mod won't give you that. Cutting a whole into the airbox will injest hot air into the engine which will diminish performance. Again if you are looking to performance gains, read the stickies more. There are other mods that you can do for that. Messing with the intake won't give you anything but a mere 1 or 2 hp, if that.

i'm looking for performance gain. Currently, i have a k&n air filter. I've checked the stickes and many have said that stock intake is the best, but if i cut holes in the airbox, wouldn't that allow more air to quickly enter and so get you more horsepower? I don't know how to quote

Alot of HAI and WAI (Shortrams, injen intakes) have hurt some people's low end power.
A hacked air box is just about the same as a HAI with a mix of stock intake. But you can always try it out and see what happens?
True more air enters the engine however, the key to performance gain in this situation is more dense air which comes from COOL air, not hot air. When you cut a hole into your air box, you are allowing hot air to enter the engine which is bad for performance.

With my hacked box I noticed a loss of low end power but increased top end. I like the mod all in all, virtually free except the 5 minutes it took for me to do it. I would recommend it, it won't hurt anything and if you don't like it throw some duct tape over the hole and back to normal, or go on with a cai or short ram.
