4th gen engine info

Got this from:

http://your.bamawisp.net/maxima/wiki/index.php/VQ30DE

The VQ30DE became the benchmark V6 engine throughout the world making the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for many years. Though similiar in external appearance to the VE30DE from the 3rd Generation (92-94) SE Maximas, the VQ is based off an all aluminum design with microfinished internals for smooth operation.

The VQ30DE did not feature, like its older sibling VE30DE, variable valve timing. Its light-weight design, however, made up for this deficiency and was able to punch out a nice fat torque curve.

There were three VQ30DE implementations for the Maxima - US Intake Manifold (USIM), US Variable Intake Manifold (00VI), and Middle Eastern Variable Inake (MEVI).

Nissan updated the VQ30DE by increasing bore and stroke along with intake enhancement - creating the 3.5L update VQ35DE for 2002+ 5th Generation Maximas.

Specifications

* 60 degree, V6
* Valve-train: dual overhead cams, chain driven, 4 valves per cylinder
* Induction System: Sequential Multi-point Fuel Injection, variable induction
* Fuel System: ECCS
* Displacement: 3.0 liters (2988cc)
* Bore: 93mm
* Stroke: 73.3mm
* Compression Ratio: 10:1
* Fuel: Premium Unleaded (91 octane)

USIM

* Horsepower (SAE net): 190 bhp (@ 5600 rpm)
* Torque (SAE net): 205 lb/ft (@ 4000 rpm)

00VI

* Horsepower (SAE net): 222 bhp (@ 6400 rpm)
* Torque (SAE net): 217 lb/ft (@ 4000 rpm)

MEVI

(requires SAE net based information)

* Horsepower (SAE gross): 227 bhp (@ 6400 rpm)
* Torque (SAE gross): 229.4 lb/ft (@ 3600 rpm)
* Compression Ratio: 9.5:1

So how do I tell once type engine I have? From the VIN?

Ahh shucks! Does that come with a reach around?

BTW: What is that metal bar in the picture above that spans across the engine and bolts into the coil over tops? Why is that there?

Front strut tower bar
Tightens up the front end to improve handling.

MEVI is going to be easier to install, but getting a bit hard to find. I believe Courtesy still sells them.

it says our US compression is 10:1, does the MEVI work better with the higher compression??? i wonder why they would have dropped the compression to 9.5:1 with that intake manifold....

i would assume it would make even more power if they used the same compression.

Just about every Gen4 imported into New Zealand from Japan has the MEVI. The Gen4 that was sold new here didn't. Total difference of 29kw - just under 40 HP.

A running hamster would count as forced induction and probably yield you some serious gains. I wonder how long they can last in 95 degree summer temperatures...

According to the info from Post #1, it says that mevi puts down 5 peak hp and 12 peak tq than 00vi. How in the world is that possible? I thought we've already shown enough dyno maps that 00vi dominates mevi everywhere. Dude, weak. I was getting ready to do a 00vi conversion soon. Now this is really making me puzzled.

Well, considering how much money were talking about for a 00VI or MEVI, why not just look for a steal deal for a 3.5 from a junkyard and do a total conversion?

Nope. Had a MEVI a while ago but sold it. Car is currently totaled. Got my eye on a sterling mist SE-L. A few local orgers are running the 00VI though.
